Bituminous mixtures - Test methods - Part 42: Amount of foreign matter in reclaimed asphalt
This document specifies a visual method of determining the amount and components of coarse foreign matter in reclaimed asphalt. A method for determining the amount and components of finer foreign matter in reclaimed asphalt is given in Annex A. This method does not completely categorize the foreign matter that can occur in reclaimed asphalt.
NOTE For the use of reclaimed asphalt in bituminous mixtures it is important to know the components in the reclaimed asphalt and to know to what extent coarse foreign matter is present that can influence the properties of the bituminous mixture.

Overview
SIST EN 12697-42:2021 is a European standard that outlines specific methodologies for determining the amount and components of foreign matter in reclaimed asphalt. This standard focuses on both coarse and finer foreign matter by employing visual inspection and a defined sampling process. The ability to accurately detect and quantify foreign materials in reclaimed asphalt is essential for maintaining the quality and performance of bituminous mixtures used in road construction and maintenance.
Key Topics
- Definition of Foreign Matter
- Coarse foreign matter: Particles larger than 8 mm in reclaimed asphalt not originating from asphalt pavements or surplus production.
- Finer foreign matter: Particles between 4 mm and 8 mm, with method details provided in Annex A.
- Sampling and Visual Inspection
- Representative samples from reclaimed asphalt stockpiles are visually inspected for foreign materials.
- Samples are separated and categorized into sub-groups: natural aggregates, material derived from asphalt, and specified groupings of foreign materials (e.g., concrete, brick, metal, plastics).
- Test Methodology
- The main method relies on visual inspection, mechanical sieving, and mass determination, complemented by chemical identification where necessary (such as using hydrochloric acid or dichloromethane to identify certain components).
- Result Expression and Reporting
- Results are given as percentages by mass, with reporting requirements including the types and amounts of each foreign material group.
- The test must be repeated if significant discrepancies between sub-sample analyses are found.
Applications
SIST EN 12697-42:2021 serves as a crucial resource for:
- Recycling Facilities: Ensuring reclaimed asphalt conforms to quality requirements before inclusion in new bituminous mixtures.
- Construction Companies: Assessing the suitability of recycled materials for road base or surface layers.
- Quality Control Laboratories: Implementing standardized procedures for foreign matter analysis in reclaimed asphalt.
- Regulatory Bodies: Verifying compliance with road construction specifications concerning recycled content.
The presence of excessive or certain types of foreign matter, such as brick, wood, or plastics, can adversely impact the performance and durability of asphalt mixtures. This standard therefore supports improved sustainability and quality in road construction by promoting reliable use of reclaimed asphalt.
Related Standards
For comprehensive bituminous mixtures testing and reclaimed asphalt assessment, the following standards are closely related to SIST EN 12697-42:2021:
- EN 932-1: Tests for general properties of aggregates - Sampling methods.
- EN 933-2: Determination of particle size distribution for aggregates.
- EN 12697-27: Bituminous mixtures - Test methods for sampling.
- EN 13108-8: Harmonized definitions and products for recycled bituminous materials.
These documents provide complementary procedures and definitions for sampling, sizing, and general aggregate testing, ensuring consistent quality across different stages of road construction and material recycling.
By adhering to SIST EN 12697-42:2021, industry stakeholders promote quality control, recycling efficiency, and road performance. This standard plays a vital role in the responsible use of reclaimed asphalt, supporting both economic and environmental objectives in the construction sector.
