Testing sprayed concrete - Part 4: Bond strength of cores by direct tension
This European Standard describes a means of determining the tensile bond between sprayed concrete and substrate of concrete or rock tested in a laboratory as a direct tension test. Bond strength is defined as the capacity to transfer tension between two layers. Bond strength is calculated as the ultimate tensile force divided by the stressed cross-sectional area of a core, drilled out of a sprayed concrete layer together with a portion of the substrate concrete or rock.
Alternative in situ test methods for determining bond strength are allowed provided they meet all the requirements of this European Standard. In case of dispute, the method described in this European Standard is the reference test method.

Overview
SIST EN 14488-4:2005+A1:2008 is a European standard that specifies a laboratory method for testing the bond strength of sprayed concrete using cores subjected to direct tension. The bond strength is a crucial parameter in evaluating the capacity of sprayed concrete (shotcrete) to effectively transfer tensile stresses to the substrate, whether the substrate is concrete or rock. This standard outlines procedures for extracting cores from composite structures and determining the tensile bond at the interface, ensuring the reliability and safety of construction projects employing sprayed concrete techniques.
The document is key for civil engineering, shotcrete applications, quality assurance, and the maintenance and repair of concrete structures, offering a consistent, recognized reference for measuring and reporting bond strength.
Key Topics
Tensile Bond Strength Definition
The bond strength is defined as the ultimate tensile force transferred across the interface, divided by the stressed cross-sectional area of the core that includes both the sprayed concrete and substrate material.Direct Tension Core Testing
The test involves drilling a core through the sprayed layer and substrate, preparing the specimen, gluing steel dollies to both ends, and applying a controlled tensile load until failure.Classification of Failure Modes
Failures are categorized to distinguish between fractures occurring at the bond zone (true bond failure) and those occurring outside it (indicating bond strength exceeds measured tensile stress).Alternative Test Methods
The standard allows for alternative in-situ testing methods, provided they comply with its requirements. However, in case of dispute, the prescribed laboratory direct tension method serves as the reference.Reporting and Compliance
Detailed requirements are provided for documenting results, including failures, test conditions, deviations, and specimen identification, ensuring traceability and conformity with the standard.
Applications
Quality Control of Sprayed Concrete
Construction and infrastructure projects rely on robust bond strength between sprayed concrete and existing substrates for tunnels, retaining walls, and linings. This test ensures consistent performance and adherence to design specifications.Assessment of Repairs and Overlays
For repair work and structural overlays, verifying the bond between new sprayed concrete and old surfaces is critical to the long-term success and safety of remedial works.Rock Stabilization in Tunneling
The bond between shotcrete and rock in tunnel linings or mining applications is essential for structural integrity, making accurate bond strength testing vital.Dispute Resolution
In scenarios where different testing methods provide conflicting results, the laboratory direct tension test specified in this standard acts as the authoritative reference.Research and Development
Laboratories and manufacturers use this standard to develop and optimize sprayed concrete formulations, admixtures, and application techniques for improved performance.
