Overview
oSIST prEN 15727:2008 is a draft European standard developed by SIST under the auspices of CEN/TC 156. This document specifies requirements and test procedures for the leakage classification of technical ductwork products used in building ventilation and air conditioning systems. It establishes uniform methodologies for measuring, reporting, and classifying the airtightness performance of ductwork components that have functionalities beyond air conveyance-such as sound attenuators, filter boxes, and duct fans. The standard is designed to harmonize ductwork product performance within the European market, serving as a vital reference for manufacturers, designers, installers, and facility managers focused on the optimization of building air distribution systems.
Key Topics
Scope of Application: The standard applies to technical ductwork products installed in ventilation and air conditioning systems, specifically those conforming to EN 1505, EN 1506, EN 13180, and EN 13403, and does not cover basic duct components like bends or reducers.
Leakage Classification: Defines airtightness classes (A, B, C, D) for ductwork products, aligning with EN 12237, and stipulates corresponding maximum allowable leakage limits based on static pressure levels.
Testing Methodology:
- Prescribes test procedures involving multiple positive and negative test pressures.
- Details requirements for instrumentation calibration and measurement accuracy.
- Specifies calculations for total joint length, virtual surface area, air leakage factor, and correction for environmental conditions.
Reporting Requirements: Outlines the comprehensive data and documentation needed in test reports for traceability and compliance verification, including product specifications, test conditions, and achieved tightness classes.
Special Cases: Clarifies the scope with respect to products like dampers, air handling units, and flexible ducts, which have their own classification standards and are not covered under this document.
Applications
oSIST prEN 15727:2008 is directly applicable to:
- Manufacturers of Technical Ductwork Products: Ensures consistent product performance and eases market access across Europe by providing a clear framework for leakage testing and classification.
- System Designers and Consulting Engineers: Facilitates the selection of ductwork components that meet required air tightness specifications, supporting system energy efficiency and indoor air quality.
- Installers and Contractors: Assists in the identification and installation of compliant products, reducing the risk of leaky systems and supporting best practices in building services.
- Building Managers and Maintenance Teams: Provides assurance that installed ductwork meets recognized airtightness standards, aiding in long-term system performance and maintenance planning.
In practice, effective implementation of these requirements supports energy conservation, system reliability, and regulatory compliance within both new constructions and system upgrades.
