Overview
PSIST prEN 1015-14:2001 is a European standard issued by SIST that sets out a laboratory test method for assessing the durability of hardened masonry mortars. This part of the standard specifically applies to mortars where cement constitutes more than 50% of the total binder mass, and includes mortars with both normal and lightweight aggregates. The method is designed for use under rigorous, simulated conditions to ensure the long-term performance of masonry mortars in building applications. Notably, this standard may also be relevant when evaluating mortar beds sourced from existing masonry structures as part of conservation or assessment activities.
Key Topics
- Durability Testing: The standard details procedures for subjecting masonry mortars to intensive laboratory conditions, allowing for an objective assessment of their durability.
- Binder Composition: Focuses on mortars in which cement is the primary binder, exceeding 50% by mass, ensuring that testing is relevant to the most common modern mortar formulations.
- Aggregate Types: Applies to mixtures with both standard and lightweight aggregates, making the standard relevant to a wide range of masonry applications and material specifications.
- Sample Origin: Testing procedures can be used for both laboratory-produced mortars and mortar beds taken from standing structures, such as those needing restoration analysis.
Applications
PSIST prEN 1015-14:2001 is a cornerstone in quality control and assurance for the construction industry, especially where masonry durability is critical. Typical uses include:
- Construction Material Selection: Assists manufacturers and builders in selecting mortar formulations proven to meet durability standards under demanding conditions.
- Performance Verification: Provides a uniform method for verifying that masonry mortars will withstand environmental factors likely to affect long-term structural integrity.
- Restoration and Conservation: Enables testing of existing mortars taken from historic or legacy structures, informing restoration strategies and materials matching.
- Regulatory Compliance: Helps organizations or contractors demonstrate compliance with European and national regulations concerning masonry construction quality and safety.
- Product Development: Informs research and development of new masonry products by providing standardized testing benchmarks for durability.
Related Standards
For comprehensive quality assurance and technical conformity in masonry works, PSIST prEN 1015-14:2001 is part of a family of standards that address mortar testing methods and specifications, including:
- EN 1015 Series: Covers various methods of test for mortar, including workability, compressive strength, water absorption, and adhesion.
- EN 998 Series: Specifies requirements for mortar for masonry, including general-purpose and special mortars.
- EN 197 Series: Relates to cement composition, specifications, and conformity criteria, supporting the selection of suitable binders.
- ISO 679: International standard for testing cement mortar strength, providing context for broader materials testing.
Practical Value
By standardizing durability testing, PSIST prEN 1015-14:2001 ensures consistent, reliable results across laboratories and projects throughout Europe. Its application boosts the longevity and safety of masonry constructions, enhances decision-making in material specification, and supports compliance with evolving construction standards. This standard is essential for anyone involved in the production, specification, or assessment of cement-based masonry mortars where durability is a critical concern.
