Overview

SIST EN ISO 19232-3:2025 - Non-destructive testing – Image quality of radiographs – Part 3: Image quality values provides essential requirements for ensuring uniform radiographic image quality in non-destructive testing (NDT). This standard specifies the minimum image quality indicator (IQI) values required for two testing classes, A and B, as defined in ISO 5579. It applies to both wire-type IQIs (as covered by ISO 19232-1) and step/hole-type IQIs (as outlined in ISO 19232-2), delivering a harmonized approach to assessing the quality of radiographic images in industrial applications.

Key Topics

  • Minimum IQI Values: Defines the lowest acceptable image quality indicator values to establish a consistent threshold for radiographic image quality.
  • Testing Classes A and B: Differentiation of techniques, with Class A typically representing basic procedures and Class B standing for improved, more stringent radiographic methods as referenced in ISO 5579.
  • Types of IQIs: Coverage includes both wire-type and step/hole-type image quality indicators, ensuring compatibility with international practices.
  • Single and Double-Wall Techniques: Details requirements for both single-wall and double-wall radiographic testing scenarios, guiding the selection and positioning of IQIs depending on the technique used.
  • Use of Gamma Sources: Provides guidance on the application of IQIs when gamma radiation sources such as Iridium-192 or Selenium-75 are employed, including justified reductions in minimum values under specific conditions.
  • Verification and Reporting: Emphasizes the importance of correctly verifying IQI placement, image interpretation, and documentation in accordance with international standards.

Applications

The provisions of SIST EN ISO 19232-3:2025 are practical for a variety of sectors where non-destructive radiographic testing is critical, including:

  • Weld Inspection: Ensures the detection and evaluation of internal flaws or discontinuities in welded joints, especially in pipeline and pressure vessel construction.
  • Metallic Materials Testing: Used widely in the assessment of ferrous and non-ferrous materials for safety-critical components.
  • Power Generation: Applied in routine and in-service inspections of components like turbine blades, piping, and reactors to guarantee operational integrity.
  • Oil and Gas Industry: Ensures the quality of pipeline welds and structural elements exposed to high pressure and corrosive environments.
  • Manufacturing Quality Assurance: Supports process control and product validation to meet regulatory and client requirements.

By mandating minimum image quality values and standardized evaluation procedures, this standard helps organizations achieve reliable flaw detection, maintain compliance with safety requirements, and support asset integrity management programs.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
ISO draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)
patent(s). ISO takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed patent
rights in respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document, ISO had not received notice of (a)
patent(s) which may be required to implement this document. However, implementers are cautioned that
this may not represent the latest information, which may be obtained from the patent database available at

related to conformity assessment, as well as information about ISO's adherence to the World Trade
Organization (WTO) principles in the Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT), see www.iso.org/iso/foreword.html.
This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 135, Non-destructive testing, Subcommittee
SC 5, Radiographic testing, in collaboration with the European Committee for Standardization (CEN)
Technical Committee CEN/TC 138, Non-destructive testing, in accordance with the Agreement on technical
cooperation between ISO and CEN (Vienna Agreement).
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 19232-3:2013), which has been technically
revised.
The main changes are as follows:
— title change from: “image quality classes” to “Minimum image quality values”;
— additions to definitions 3.2 and 3.3;
— renamed Clause 4 “Image quality values”;
— revision of Clause 7 “Reduction of image quality values for gamma radiography”;
— renamed Clauses 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 for better readability and traceability;
— updated nominal thickness values for IQI values W2 to W5 in table 1;
— updated titles of all tables for better readability and traceability;
— editorial changes.
A list of all parts in the ISO 19232 series can be found on the ISO website.
