Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components - Basic test and measurement procedures - Part 3-51: Examinations and measurements - Gauge pin withdrawal force for rectangular ferrule multi-fibre connectors (IEC 61300-3-51:2014)

IEC 61300-3-51:2014 is intended to describe the procedure required to measure the pin gauge withdrawal force for rectangular ferrule multi-fibre connectors. This measurement can be used as an alternative to the measurement of the pin gauge insertion force, both of which evaluate the fit of the pin gauge(s) into the guide pin hole(s) of the female-type connector. The experimental verification of interchangeability between them is shown in Annex A. For the male-type connector, IEC 61300-3-49 is applied to evaluate how securely the guide pins are retained in the guide holes.

Overview

SIST EN 61300-3-51:2015 outlines standardized test and measurement procedures for evaluating the gauge pin withdrawal force in rectangular ferrule multi-fibre optical connectors. This European standard, harmonized with IEC 61300-3-51:2014, defines the methodologies used to ensure proper fit and mechanical integrity of multi-fibre connectors by assessing the force needed to withdraw a pin gauge from the connector guide pin holes. The standardized procedure is essential for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and quality control teams involved in the production and assessment of fibre optic interconnects used in modern data transmission networks.

Measuring the pin gauge withdrawal force is recommended as an alternative to the pin gauge insertion force for female-type multi-fibre optical connectors, providing a less demanding but equally robust evaluation of connector fit. The standard also highlights the experimental equivalence and interchangeability between withdrawal and insertion force measurements.

Key Topics

  • Pin Gauge Withdrawal Force
    • Defines the process for measuring the force necessary to withdraw a pin gauge from guide pin holes in rectangular ferrule multi-fibre connectors.
  • Test Methods
    • Method A: Using calibrated weights to determine if the pin gauge or plug gauge is withdrawn at a given force.
    • Method B: Using a tensile testing machine to measure the maximum force required to withdraw the gauge.
  • Applicability
    • Applies to connectors defined in IEC 61754-5 (MT connectors), IEC 61754-7-1/7-2 (MPO connectors), IEC 61754-10 (Mini-MPO), and IEC 61754-18 (MT-RJ connectors).
  • Guidance on Test Conditions
    • Precise control of temperature (22–24°C) and relative humidity (50% ± 10%) during tests.
    • Specifications for fixtures, chucks, pin gauges, plug gauges, and equipment to ensure reliable and repeatable results.
  • Alternative to Insertion Force
    • Demonstrates, through Annex A, that withdrawal force measurement provides equivalent results to insertion force, with reliable repeatability, thereby simplifying verification procedures.

Applications

The requirements and procedures in SIST EN 61300-3-51:2015 have practical significance for a broad range of fibre optic applications:

  • Quality Control in Manufacturing
    • Ensures consistency and mechanical integrity of multi-fibre connectors during production.
    • Supports compliance with international standards for connector fit.
  • Product Development and R&D
    • Provides standardized methods for design verification and prototype evaluation.
    • Enables benchmarking of new connector designs for compatibility and performance.
  • Test and Inspection Laboratories
    • Facilitates repeatable, transparent measurement of connector withdrawal forces as part of type testing or acceptance testing.
  • Network Installation and Maintenance
    • Assists field engineers and technicians in verifying connectors meet fit specifications, thereby reducing future reliability risks.

By standardizing the measurement approaches for pin gauge withdrawal force, network operators and component suppliers can ensure sustainable performance, high reliability, and compatibility in fibre optic networks.

Related Standards

For organizations and professionals involved in fibre optics, the following standards are closely related and often referenced alongside SIST EN 61300-3-51:2015:

  • IEC 61300-3-1

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
