Overview
SIST EN IEC 61753-042-02:2026 establishes the performance standard for plug-pigtail-style and plug-receptacle-style OTDR reflecting devices used in fibre optic systems within controlled environments (Category C). Developed by SIST and aligned with IEC 61753-1, this standard defines initial minimum performance, testing, and measurement requirements essential for reliable in-field and laboratory operation of OTDR reflecting devices, playing a key role in fibre optic interconnectivity and passive optical component testing.
Key Topics
- OTDR Reflecting Devices: These are optical filters with two ports that transmit operational signals and reflect OTDR test signals, allowing for out-of-band testing of optical fibre networks.
- Device Styles:
- Plug-pigtail-style: Integrates a connector plug with an attached fibre pigtail.
- Plug-receptacle-style: Features a plug and compatible receptacle interface.
- Performance and Testing:
- Attenuation (Insertion Loss): Strict requirements for low insertion loss across the operation’s passband wavelengths.
- Wavelength Isolation: High standards for isolation between operational and test wavelengths to ensure system integrity.
- Return Loss and Reflectance Grades: Devices are categorized (S1, S2, T1, T2) by their reflectance, matching different network needs.
- Polarization Dependent Loss (PDL): Specifies maximum allowable loss to ensure accuracy in high-speed transmission.
- Environmental and Mechanical Reliability: Mandates rigorous testing, including optical power, cold, heat, damp heat, vibration, mechanical strength, and torsion, to guarantee stability in controlled environments.
- Sample Size and Reporting: Defines sample quantities for robust statistical assurance and requires detailed test reporting for transparency and traceability.
Applications
- Fibre Network Maintenance and Monitoring: OTDR reflecting devices are essential in out-of-band OTDR testing, enabling remote diagnostics and routine inspection without service interruption.
- Passive Optical Network (PON) Performance: Supports testing in FTTH, FTTx, and enterprise optical networks to ensure reliability and pinpoint faults accurately.
- System Integration and Manufacturing: Provides a consistent quality benchmark for component suppliers, ensuring interoperability and performance in multi-vendor environments.
- Lab and Field Testing in Controlled Environments: Assures dependable results in environmentally controlled scenarios such as data centers, central offices, or dedicated test labs.
Related Standards
Implementing SIST EN IEC 61753-042-02:2026 is supported by a suite of related fibre optic and OTDR standards:
- IEC 61753-1: General performance requirements for fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components.

1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
