Overview

SIST EN IEC 61754-4:2022/A1:2026 is an amendment to the international standard for fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components, with a specific focus on the interfaces for the Type SC connector family. This amendment, developed by the Slovenski inštitut za standardizacijo (SIST), introduces modifications and clarifications to connector interface specifications to ensure alignment with related IEC standards and facilitate compatibility, safety, and optimal performance in fibre optic networks.

The Type SC connector is widely used in telecommunications and data communication networks due to its ease of use, reliability, and standardization. Maintaining up-to-date interface standards is essential for interoperability, quality control, and future-proofing of fibre optic infrastructure.

Key Topics

This amendment covers essential updates related to:

  • Normative references: Inclusion of IEC 61755-3 (all parts) and IEC 63267-3 (all parts) to align connector parameters with the latest industry requirements for both single-mode and multimode fibres.
  • Connector interface specifications: Revised figures, tables, and designations for simplex and duplex PC plug connector interfaces, emphasizing references to updated IEC standards for dimensional and performance parameters.
  • Grade characteristics: Modifications to the way connector grades are defined in related tables, directing users to refer to the appropriate IEC 61755-3 or IEC 63267-3 series for detailed specifications.
  • Dimensional details: Specification adjustments related to plug connector dimensions, pin gauge measurements, and corrections in table references, ensuring greater clarity and accuracy.
  • References and notes: Streamlining by deleting outdated notes and bibliographic references, reducing ambiguity and focusing on current standards.

Applications

This amendment is crucial for a range of stakeholders in the fibre optics industry, including:

  • Manufacturers of fibre optic connectors and assemblies
    • Ensures production aligns with the latest technical specifications for SC connector interfaces.
    • Supports global interoperability and compliance in supply chains.
  • Network designers and engineers
    • Provides a clear reference for specifying SC-type connectors in network builds, upgrades, and maintenance.
    • Helps ensure compatibility and consistent performance across both new and legacy optical communication systems.
  • Testing and certification bodies
    • Offers updated criteria for compliance testing and certification of SC connector-based products.
    • Aids in verifying adherence to the most current international standards.
  • Telecommunications operators and data center managers
    • Promotes system reliability and service quality through adherence to standardized connector interfaces.
    • Facilitates efficient network troubleshooting, upgrades, and expansions.

Related Standards

This amendment references and aligns with key international standards relevant to fibre optic connector interfaces:

  • IEC 61754-4:2022: The base standard for the SC connector family interface.
  • IEC 61755-3 (all parts): Specifies connector parameters for dispersion unshifted single-mode physically contacting fibres.
  • IEC 63267-3 (all parts): Provides connector parameters for enhanced macro bend multimode fibres with 50 µm core diameter.
  • Other IEC connector interface standards: For additional connector types and families ensuring wide-ranging compatibility in fibre optic infrastructure.

By incorporating these references, SIST EN IEC 61754-4:2022/A1:2026 ensures that the SC connector interface specifications remain robust, harmonized, and suitable for the evolving needs of global fibre optic networks.

AMENDMENT 1
FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are m
