Resilient floor coverings - Specification for plain and decorative linoleum on a foam backing

This document specifies the characteristics of plain and decorated linoleum on a foam backing as a compound floor covering, supplied in roll form.
To encourage the consumer to make an informed choice, this document includes a classification system based on the intensity of use, which shows where resilient floor coverings provide satisfactory service.
The term 'linoleum' is frequently incorrectly applied to a range of floor coverings, often to those based on polyvinyl chloride or rubber. Such materials are not included in this document.

Overview

SIST EN 686:2019 – Resilient Floor Coverings: Linoleum on Foam Backing is a European standard developed by the Slovenski inštitut za standardizacijo (SIST). This standard specifies the requirements and characteristics of both plain and decorative linoleum floor coverings mounted on foam backing, supplied in roll form. Designed to serve as a comprehensive reference for manufacturers, suppliers, installers, and specifiers, it provides a unified specification that ensures product quality and consistency across domestic, commercial, and light industrial applications.

A key function of SIST EN 686:2019 is to offer a classification system based on intensity of use, enabling consumers and professionals to make informed choices regarding the suitability and expected performance of resilient floor coverings in various environments.

Note: This standard applies exclusively to linoleum products and does not cover floor coverings made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), rubber, or similar materials.

Key Topics

1. Product Definition and Identification

  • Linoleum, as defined by this standard, is a floor covering manufactured via calendering a homogeneous mixture of linoleum cement, cork or wood flour, pigments, and fillers onto a fibrous or foam backing, then cured by oxidation.
  • Identification criteria include specific chemical tests ensuring authenticity and quality.

2. Performance and Technical Requirements

  • Specifies requirements for:
    • Overall thickness and consistency
    • Mass per unit area
    • Flexibility and color fastness to light
    • Residual indentation (resilience post-static loading)
    • Peel resistance between foam and fibrous backing
  • Products must meet minimum quality thresholds to ensure durability, especially under furniture use, such as resistance to castor chair effects.

3. Classification System

  • Classification according to intensity of end-use:
    • Domestic: Moderate, general, and heavy usage
    • Commercial: Moderate, general, and heavy duty
    • Light industrial: Moderate use
  • Thickness and other product properties determine the appropriate class.

4. Labelling and Documentation

  • Each roll must be marked with:
    • Standard reference (EN 686:2019)
    • Manufacturer and batch information
    • Product specification and dimensions
    • Relevant class symbol and foam backing type

Applications

SIST EN 686:2019 linoleum on foam backing is designed for a variety of flooring projects, offering a resilient, durable solution with both plain and decorative options. Practical applications include:

  • Residential buildings: Living rooms, kitchens, corridors that benefit from cushioned, sound-absorbing, and low-maintenance flooring.
  • Commercial environments: Retail shops, classrooms, and offices where moderate to heavy foot traffic occurs and decorative aesthetics are desired.
  • Light industrial settings: Areas needing resilient performance for moderate industrial activity without exposure to excessive loads.

The classification system helps architects, designers, and facility managers confidently select products best suited to the intended area of use, optimizing performance, safety, and value over time.

Related Standards

To fully meet the requirements of SIST EN 686:2019 and ensure high-quality resilient floor installation, the following related international standards should be consulted:

  • EN ISO 10874: Classification for resilient, textile, and laminate floor coverings
  • EN ISO 23997: Determination of mass per unit area
  • EN ISO 24346: Determination of overall thickness
  • EN ISO 24341: Determination of length, width, and straightness of sheet
  • EN ISO 24343-1 & EN ISO 24344: Tests for indentation and flexibility
  • EN ISO 26985: Identification of linoleum and content analysis
  • ISO 4918: Castor chair test for flooring durability

By adhering to SIST EN 686:2019 and these related standards, stakeholders can ensure reliable, high-performance, and sustainable resilient floor coverings for a broad range of interior environments.
