Overview
SIST EN ISO 23997:2012 defines a standard method for the determination of mass per unit area for resilient floor coverings, based on ISO 23997:2007. Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and adopted by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and SIST, this standard provides a clear, repeatable procedure for measuring the mass per unit area-a key performance metric for flooring materials used in commercial, industrial, and residential applications. Accurate measurement of this property is critical for manufacturers, specifiers, and end-users to ensure consistent product quality, performance, and regulatory compliance.
Key Topics
- Resilient Floor Coverings: The standard focuses on non-textile, resilient floor materials such as vinyl, linoleum, rubber, and similar products.
- Mass per Unit Area Concept: It defines the mass per unit area as the quotient of the sample’s mass and its area, typically expressed in grams per square metre (g/m²).
- Sampling and Testing Method: Detailed procedures outline how to select and condition representative samples, measure specimen size and mass, and conduct the calculation.
- Laboratory Equipment: The document specifies the necessary apparatus, including a high-precision balance and caliper gauge, to ensure accurate measurements.
- Testing Environment: Requirements are given for the ambient conditions-23 ± 2 °C temperature and 50 ± 5 % relative humidity-to ensure consistency and repeatability of results.
- Reporting Requirements: The standard details mandatory elements for a test report, including identification of the tested product, test conditions, mean mass per unit area, and any deviations from the standard protocol.
Applications
SIST EN ISO 23997:2012 finds application throughout the resilient flooring industry:
- Product Development: Enables manufacturers to assess and optimize the consistency and specification compliance of their flooring products during research, design, and quality assurance stages.
- Quality Control: Used in production settings to verify that manufactured flooring materials meet declared specifications for mass per unit area, facilitating batch consistency and minimizing product variability.
- Specification and Procurement: Assists architects, specifiers, and procurement professionals in comparing different flooring products and ensuring suppliers meet required performance criteria.
- Regulatory Compliance: Supports compliance with industry and national regulations by providing a harmonized method for measuring and reporting mass per unit area.
- End-User Assurance: Offers confidence to installation professionals and end-users that the received flooring product adheres to published technical data.
Related Standards
For comprehensive flooring assessment, the following related standards are frequently referenced alongside SIST EN ISO 23997:2012:
- EN 430 - Earlier European standard for determining mass per unit area, superseded by EN ISO 23997.
- ISO/TC 219 Standards - Series of ISO standards addressing various properties and test methods for floor coverings.
- EN ISO 10581 - PVC floor coverings - Specification.
- EN ISO 24343 - Resilient floor coverings - Determination of indentation.
- EN ISO 24342 - Resilient floor coverings - Determination of length, width, and straightness.
Adopting SIST EN ISO 23997:2012 offers practical value by standardizing mass measurement for resilient floor coverings, enhancing product comparability, quality control, and international trade compliance within the flooring industry. This methodical approach eliminates ambiguity, ensuring all stakeholders can rely on clear, repeatable test results for decision-making and regulatory needs.
