Bitumen and bituminous binders - Determination of staining tendency of bitumen
This document specifies a method for the determination of the staining tendency of bitumen.
This method is applicable to bitumen having a Ring-and-Ball softening point greater than or equal to 80 °C. For softer bitumen, the test conditions may be modified by agreement between the involved parties.
The procedure described in this document may be used to compare results against a material for which the staining tendency is known.
NOTE Staining properties are related to the colloidal stability of the bitumen with higher values indicating lower stability.
WARNING The use of this standard can involve hazardous materials, operations and equipment. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety problems associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
Bitumen in bitumenska veziva - Ugotavljanje izločanja oljne komponente

Overview
SIST EN 13301:2010 establishes a standardized method for determining the staining tendency of bitumen and bituminous binders. This standard is essential in the construction and materials industries for evaluating bitumen products, especially where risk of staining or material compatibility is a concern. It is specifically applicable to bitumen with a Ring-and-Ball softening point of 80°C or higher, though the procedure can be modified for softer bitumen by mutual agreement. Staining properties are closely related to the colloidal stability of bitumen, and higher staining values typically indicate lower stability.
Key Topics
- Staining Tendency Definition: Refers to the inclination of bitumen’s oil components to separate and potentially cause staining of adjacent materials. This can impact bitumen-based roofing, sealing, and construction applications.
- Scope of Applicability: Primarily covers bitumen and bituminous binders suitable for applications where high temperature softening points are required. The method outlined is comparative, allowing results to be benchmarked against reference materials.
- Test Method:
- Preparation and sampling procedures to ensure consistency and reliability.
- Use of specified apparatus, including rings, filter papers, and ovens.
- Detailed step-by-step instructions for sample conditioning, measurement, and calculation of stained ring width.
- Safety Considerations: Handling bitumen and related equipment involves potential hazards. Users are responsible for implementing safety practices and ensuring regulatory compliance.
Applications
- Roofing Materials: Assessing the staining tendency of bitumen used in roofing membranes, sheets, or coatings to minimize the risk of unwanted staining during service life or storage.
- Pavement and Road Construction: Specification of bituminous binders for highways and infrastructure to ensure performance standards and material compatibility.
- Material Comparison and Quality Control: Enables manufacturers, laboratories, and quality control departments to compare different batches or formulations, ensuring that bitumen products meet project requirements and industry standards.
- Research and Development: Provides a reliable method to evaluate and improve the colloidal stability and overall quality of new bituminous formulations or additives.
Related Standards
- EN 58: Procedures for the sampling of bitumen and bituminous binders, essential for ensuring representative and reliable test results.
- EN 1427: Details the determination of the softening point of bitumen (Ring and Ball method), referenced for apparatus and procedure alignment with SIST EN 13301:2010.
- EN 12594: Guidelines for the preparation of bituminous test samples, crucial for consistency across laboratory testing.
Practical Value
Compliance with SIST EN 13301:2010 ensures that bitumen products are evaluated for staining properties in a consistent, reproducible manner. This supports quality assurance, enhances material performance, and strengthens trust between suppliers and users. Adhering to this standard helps prevent material incompatibility issues and potential damage to structures, driving better outcomes in civil engineering and construction projects. Employing standardized test methods also aligns with regulatory and industry requirements, supporting both domestic and international acceptance of bitumen products.
