Overview
SIST EN ISO 3218:2014, Essential oils - Principles of nomenclature provides internationally recognized rules for naming essential oils in English and French. Developed by ISO Technical Committee 54, this standard ensures that essential oil names are clear, unambiguous, and enable accurate identification and labeling. By defining systematic principles for naming essential oils based on source, botanical origin, plant part, and production method, it supports global trade, regulatory compliance, and consumer safety.
Key Topics
- Clarity and Distinction: Names must uniquely identify the essential oil, emphasizing botanical origin, plant part used, phenological stage, and extraction process.
- Example: "Essential oil of lavender" or "Essential oil of parsley fruits"
- Botanical Nomenclature: Where no common name exists, the full botanical name (genus and species) is used.
- Reference to botanical nomenclature is guided by ISO 4720.
- Hybrids and Varieties: Hybrids are named using both the common name and detailed botanical terms. Distinct plant varieties or clones are also specified in the oil name.
- Chemotypes: When multiple chemical races (chemotypes) exist within a botanical species, the principal chemical constituent is included in the oil’s name.
- Plant Parts: If various plant parts yield essential oils, the specific part is cited for clear identification (e.g., "Essential oil of clove leaf").
- Geographical Origin: The oil’s name may include the region or country of origin to differentiate between species or varieties of the same plant grown globally.
- Example: "Essential oil of black pepper, India type"
- Extraction Method: The method used to obtain the oil (distillation, expression, etc.) is stated.
- Example: "Essential oil of lime, obtained by distillation"
Applications
SIST EN ISO 3218:2014 supports a wide range of stakeholders in the essential oils industry, including:
- Manufacturers: Ensures consistent, compliant labeling and marketing of essential oils across international markets, reducing risk of misidentification and supporting brand integrity.
- Regulatory Bodies: Provides a reliable framework for regulatory review, import/export documentation, and quality assessment of essential oils.
- Quality Assurance and Testing Laboratories: Enables precise identification, verification, and cataloging of essential oil samples in accordance with recognized standards.
- Retailers and Distributors: Facilitates accurate product listings, inventory management, and helps inform consumers about product origins and characteristics.
- Consumers and End-Users: Increases transparency and confidence, supporting informed purchase decisions by ensuring clear identification of essential oils.
Related Standards
- ISO 4720 - Essential oils - Nomenclature: Specifies rules for naming plant species used for essential oils, referenced by ISO 3218.
- ISO 1342 - Essential oil of rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.): Provides a practical example of applying nomenclature principles for rosemary oil.
- SIST EN ISO standards for essential oil quality and testing: These standards complement nomenclature rules by defining quality, safety, and test methods for various essential oils.
Practical Value
Adhering to SIST EN ISO 3218:2014:
- Standardizes essential oil nomenclature for global trade
- Reduces confusion in product identification and labeling
- Assists with regulatory compliance and quality assurance
- Supports clear communication and documentation throughout the essential oils supply chain

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordanc
