Overview

SIST EN IEC 62196-2:2026 is a crucial standard developed by the CLC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization) that specifies dimensional compatibility requirements for AC pin and contact-tube accessories used in the conductive charging of electric vehicles (EVs). Covering plugs, socket-outlets, vehicle connectors, and vehicle inlets up to 480 V AC and currents up to 63 A (three-phase) or 70 A (single-phase), this document ensures safe, reliable, and interoperable charging infrastructure across the EV industry. This fourth edition replaces the 2022 version, introducing enhancements such as new latching device tests and updates to standard sheets for improved safety and performance.

Key Topics

  • Dimensional Compatibility: Defines physical interface configurations for EV connectors and inlets, ensuring that charging equipment from different manufacturers can safely interconnect.
  • AC Pin and Contact-Tube Accessories: Focuses on standardizing the critical parts of plugs, socket-outlets, and vehicle connectors to avoid mismatches in the field.
  • Electrical Ratings: Covers rated operating voltages up to 480 V AC and currents up to 63 A (three-phase) or 70 A (single-phase).
  • Environmental Conditions: Accessories are specified for use between -30°C and +40°C, recognizing typical operational conditions for electric vehicles.
  • Testing and Safety: Introduces new test requirements for latching devices-crucial for secure connections-and includes updates for compliance and performance of accessories.
  • Configuration Types: Outlines several standard connector types (Types 1, 2, 3, and 4) for different regional and technical requirements.
  • Earthing Requirements: Specifies identification and minimum cross-sectional area of earthing and neutral conductors for enhanced safety.

Applications

SIST EN IEC 62196-2:2026 plays a foundational role in the development, manufacturing, and deployment of EV charging infrastructure in Europe and globally. Its applications include:

  • Infrastructure Deployment: Enables utilities, city planners, and commercial installers to select and deploy AC EV charging stations that are guaranteed for compatibility and safety.
  • Product Development: Assists manufacturers of EV charging equipment, cables, and vehicles in designing accessories that can interoperate across different brands and charging networks.
  • Maintenance and Compliance: Provides guidelines for inspectors and technical teams to verify that installations meet international standards, minimizing the risk of accidents or incompatibility.
  • Interoperability Assurance: Reduces barriers for EV adoption by consumers by ensuring that EVs can connect to public and private charging stations regardless of the brand.

Related Standards

SIST EN IEC 62196-2:2026 is part of a broader framework of international EV charging standards. Related standards include:

  • IEC 61851 (all parts): Lays out general requirements for EV conductive charging systems, establishing the context for accessory standards.
  • IEC 62196-1: Specifies general requirements for plugs, socket-outlets, vehicle connectors, and vehicle inlets.
  • IEC 62196-3: Addresses compatibility requirements for DC and AC/DC pin and contact-tube vehicle couplers.
  • IEC 62196-4 and 6: Cover further aspects of DC charging and electrical separation for enhanced system safety.

By adhering to SIST EN IEC 62196-2:2026, stakeholders in the electric mobility sector can ensure interoperability, safety, and future-proof compatibility for AC charging of electric vehicles, strengthening the global adoption of sustainable transportation solutions.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) IEC draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)

INTRODUCTION
The IEC 61851 series specifies requirements for electric vehicle (EV) conductive supply
equipment.
The IEC 62196 series specifiy the requirements for plugs, socket-outlets, vehicle connectors,
vehicle inlets and cable assemblies as described in the IEC 61851 series and in IEC 62752.
Some charging using on-board vehicle chargers can be achieved by direct connection from an
electric vehicle to an AC supply network using common socket-outlets or by the use of
equipment incorporating control and communication circuits.
To support the connection of AC power for such vehicles, this document provides the standard
interface configurations of AC vehicle couplers and accessories to be used in conductive
charging of electric vehicles, taking the most frequent charging situations into consideration.
The IEC 62196 series consists of the following parts:
– IEC 62196-1: General requirements, comprising clauses of a general character;
– IEC 62196-2: Dimensional compatibility requirements for AC pin and contact-tube
accessories;
– IEC 62196-3: Dimensional compatibility requirements for DC and AC/DC pin and contact-
tube vehicle couplers;
– IEC TS 62196-4: Dimensional compatibility and interchangeability requirements for DC pin
and contact-tube accessories for class II or class III applications;
– IEC 62196-6: Dimensional compatibility requirements for DC pin and contact-tube vehicle
couplers intended to be used for DC EV supply equipment where protection relies on
electrical separation;
– IEC TS 62196-7 : Vehicle adapter.
