Overview
SIST EN 1058:2025 establishes standardized methods for the determination of characteristic values for wood-based panels used in structural applications. Specifically, it outlines procedures to determine:
- the characteristic 5-percentile values of mechanical properties, based on a log-normal distribution of test data
- the characteristic mean values (50-percentile values) of physical properties, under the assumption of a normal distribution
These methods are essential for ensuring the performance, reliability, and safety of wood-based panels in building and engineering projects. The standard's requirements are harmonized with EN 14358, and it supports compliance with the principles found in EN 1990:2023 and EN 1995-1-1:2004 for structural design practices.
Key Topics
- Scope and Application: Applies to wood-based panels produced for structural purposes, covering both mechanical and physical property testing and statistical analysis.
- Test Methods: Relies on recognized test standards (e.g., EN 789, EN 1195, EN 12871) for the generation of test data from samples collected in accordance with these procedures.
- Statistical Evaluation:
- Characteristic 5-percentile values are calculated for strength properties (such as bending strength) using log-normal distributions per EN 14358 guidance.
- Characteristic mean values correspond to the mean (50th-percentile) of physical properties, assessed with normal distribution assumptions.
- Sampling and Reporting: Provides detailed instructions for sample size, randomization, and the essential elements to be included in test reports, ensuring traceability and repeatability.
- Acceptance Criteria: Sets benchmarks for compliance with relevant specification standards for wood-based panels.
Applications
SIST EN 1058:2025 is widely applicable in industries that produce, test, or use wood-based panels for structural functions. Key applications include:
- Quality Control: Manufacturing plants and quality assurance teams use the standard to test panels for compliance and performance certification.
- Design and Engineering: Structural engineers and architects reference the characteristic values as part of their load calculations and safety assessments, ensuring designs meet regulatory and functional requirements.
- Type Testing and Factory Production Control: Laboratories and certifying bodies conduct type testing and continuous factory control to demonstrate ongoing conformity to product standards.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensures that products meet European and international requirements for construction materials, as demanded in procurement and public tenders.
The use of this standard helps maintain high levels of product safety and structural reliability in timber constructions, contributing to the broader goals of risk reduction and sustainable infrastructure.
Related Standards
A number of key standards are referenced throughout SIST EN 1058:2025, forming a comprehensive framework for the classification, testing, and statistical evaluation of wood-based panels:
- EN 789: Timber structures - Test methods for the mechanical properties of wood-based panels
- EN 1195: Timber structures - Performance of structural floor decking
- EN 12871: Wood-based panels - Performance characteristics for load-bearing panels in floors, roofs, and walls

3.1
characteristic value
value of a material property which is defined as a fractile of the distribution of that property within the
total population of that material
