Overview
SIST EN ISO 8980-3:2022/A1:2026 is an international amendment standard specifying updated requirements and clarified test methods for the transmittance properties of uncut finished spectacle lenses within the field of ophthalmic optics. Focused on transmittance specifications and measurement techniques, this amendment enhances precision when evaluating how spectacle lenses transmit or block light, including solar radiation. This standard is essential for manufacturers, regulatory authorities, and laboratory professionals concerned with uncut, unmounted lenses meant for further processing before final assembly.
Key Topics
- Transmittance Properties: The standard outlines detailed requirements for the optical transmittance of uncut finished spectacle lenses. It addresses properties such as attenuation of solar radiation and allows for claims regarding specific wavelength cut-offs.
- Measurement and Test Methods: Revised test methods define how to measure spectral transmittance, particularly for lenses that claim a specific wavelength cut. The methodology specifies instruments, conditions, and ways to assess measurement uncertainty.
- Wavelength Cut-Off Claims:
- Lenses claiming a wavelength cut at a nominated wavelength must demonstrate spectral transmittance less than 5% at that wavelength.
- For wavelengths from 280 nm up to 10 nm below the specified cut, transmittance must be less than 1%.
- Performance requirements must still be met after ultraviolet irradiation.
- Measurement Uncertainties: Updated uncertainty requirements ensure confidence and repeatability in test results:
- Not greater than 2.0% for transmittance >20%
- 1.0% for 5–20% range
- 0.5% for <5%
- Instrument Requirements:
- Use of a spectrophotometer with a specified spectral bandwidth and resolution
- Capable of covering the 280 nm to 780 nm wavelength range
- Consideration for lens thickness and the impact of instrument configuration on measurement
Applications
- Lens Manufacturing Quality Assurance: This standard supports lens manufacturers in providing evidence of compliance with international transmittance specifications, ensuring a consistent product for eyewear brands globally.
- Performance Claims: Establishes transparent and testable criteria for claims about blue light blocking, UV protection, or other specific spectral cut-off claims in ophthalmic lenses.
- Regulatory Compliance: Laboratories and regulatory agencies use these specifications and methods to verify that spectacle lenses marketed for UV or solar protection perform as claimed.
- Product Development: Research and development teams rely on this standard to benchmark new materials and coatings for their optical performance, especially concerning specific light wavelength blocking.
- Comparative Measurement: The annex provides important guidance for controlling parameters such as lens thickness and spectrophotometer type to allow fair comparative measurement between products and materials.
Related Standards
- ISO 8980-3:2022: The parent standard for uncut finished spectacle lenses, providing full context for transmittance requirements.
- ISO/IEC Guide 98-3: Guidance on measurement uncertainty, referenced for confidence levels and analytical best practices in testing.
- ISO 18526-2:2020: Offers additional practical details on measurement uncertainty specific to the evaluation of ophthalmic lenses.
- Other Ophthalmic Optical Standards: Related to lens safety, durability, and other optical properties concerning the manufacture and certification of spectacle lenses.
Keywords: ophthalmic optics, uncut spectacle lenses, transmittance specifications, wavelength cut, test methods, measurement uncertainty, ISO 8980-3, UV protection, optical standards, lens testing
By adhering to SIST EN ISO 8980-3:2022/A1:2026, stakeholders across the eyewear supply chain can ensure products meet international benchmarks for transmittance and protect consumer safety and satisfaction.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
