Overview
oSIST prEN 13810-1:2026 is a European draft standard specifying the performance requirements and technical specifications for wood-based panels used in fully supported, non-structural floating floors. Developed by SIST in alignment with CEN/TC 112, this standard ensures that wood-based panels applied in floating flooring systems meet consistent criteria for quality, durability, mechanical performance, and suitability for a range of service environments. This document supersedes the earlier EN 13810-1:2002, reflecting updates in panel types, test methods, and editorial structure.
Floating floors are widely used in residential, commercial, and public buildings, offering advantages in sound and thermal insulation, installation flexibility, and maintenance. This standard is essential for manufacturers, floor system suppliers, architects, and construction professionals involved in specifying or installing wood-based floating floors.
Key Topics
- Scope and Applicability: Defines requirements for wood-based panels in floating floors that are fully supported but not fixed to the structural substrate, excluding structural or load-bearing purposes.
- Panel Types and Classification: Covers particleboard, oriented strand board (OSB), plywood, fibreboard, solid wood panels, and cement-bonded particleboard, outlining characteristics such as grade, thickness, surface appearance, and service class.
- Durability Criteria:
- Biological durability according to use class and resistance to wood-destroying organisms
- Moisture resistance requirements tailored to either dry or humid service classes
- Mechanical Performance:
- Stiffness and deflection limits
- Resistance to uniformly distributed, concentrated, alternating (dynamic), and impact loads
- Installation Guidance:
- Moisture and vapour control layers to prevent damage
- Requirements for flatness and preparation of sub-floors
- Recommendations for insulation (sound and thermal) and proper jointing techniques
- Documentation and Sampling: Specifies the sampling process for prototype testing and the documentation necessary to verify compliance with the relevant load categories.
Applications
Wood-based panels in accordance with oSIST prEN 13810-1:2026 are used in floating floor systems across various environments:
- Residential buildings: Living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and hallways
- Offices and commercial spaces: Office areas, retail shops, exhibition areas, waiting rooms, and reception areas
- Public and institutional buildings: Hospitals, schools, hotels, conference and assembly halls, theatres, museums, and libraries
The standard supports practical floor construction by:
- Specifying panel selection based on expected moisture conditions (service class 1: dry; service class 2: humid)
- Recommending use of tongue-and-groove panels with glued joints for dimensional stability
- Outlining installation procedures to protect panels from moisture during and after construction
- Providing specific panel and insulation combinations suitable for sound and thermal insulation requirements
Related Standards
oSIST prEN 13810-1:2026 references a comprehensive set of European and international standards, fostering consistent product performance and safety:
- CEN/TS 13810-2: Test methods for wood-based panels in floating floors
- EN 300, EN 312, EN 636: OSB, particleboard, and plywood specifications
- EN 315, EN 322, EN 318: Dimensional tolerances, moisture content, and dimensional changes
