Abstract

This Part of EN 1504 specifies requirements for the identification, performance (including durability) and safety of products and systems to be used for the anchoring of reinforcing steel (rebar) as used for structural strengthening to ensure the continuity of reinforced concrete structures.
This Part of EN 1504 covers the fields of application in accordance with repair method 4.2 of ENV 1504-9:1997.
NOTE   It is assumed that a proper structural assessment of the structural elements to be subjected to repair is carried out by qualified engineers and that the choice of the products and systems to be used as well as the design are based on this assessment.

Overview

EN 1504-6:2006 is the CEN (European) standard that defines requirements, identification, quality control and conformity assessment for products and systems used for the anchoring of reinforcing steel bars (rebar) in reinforced concrete structures. It applies to anchoring products based on hydraulic binders, synthetic resins or their mixtures used for structural strengthening (repair method 4.2). The standard assumes a prior structural assessment by qualified engineers and supports safe, durable rebar anchoring for concrete repair and strengthening projects.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Performance characteristics required for all intended uses: pull-out resistance, chloride ion content, and (for polymers) glass transition temperature and creep under tensile load.
  • Critical performance limits (examples from the standard):
    • Pull-out test (prEN 1881): displacement ≤ 0.6 mm at 75 kN.
    • Chloride ion content (EN 1015-17): ≤ 0.05% (to limit corrosion risk).
    • Glass transition temperature (EN 12614, polymers): ≥ 45 °C or at least 20 °C above the maximum ambient service temperature.
    • Creep under sustained tensile load (prEN 1544, polymers): displacement ≤ 0.6 mm after continuous 50 kN for 3 months.
  • Identification and initial type testing: granulometry, infrared analysis, compressive strength, stiffening time, workability and resin-specific tests (epoxy equivalent, amine functions, pot life).
  • Factory Production Control (FPC): manufacturers must implement FPC to maintain conformity; Annex A gives guidance on testing frequency. Correlation between production tests and initial type tests must be documented.
  • Safety and environment: hardened products must not release dangerous substances (Annex B). Reaction-to-fire classification is required where applicable (EN 13501-1).
  • Marking and CE: labelling, CE marking and conformity procedures are addressed in EN 1504-8 and Annex ZA.

Applications and users

  • Practical uses: post-installed and cast-in-place anchoring of rebars for structural repair, connecting new reinforcement to existing concrete, reinstating load paths in rehabilitation and strengthening works.
  • Typical users:
    • Manufacturers of anchoring mortars, epoxy adhesives and polymer-cement systems
    • Test laboratories and conformity assessors
    • Structural and geotechnical engineers specifying repairs
    • Contractors and restoration specialists performing rebar anchoring
    • Specifiers and authorities requiring CE-marked products

Related standards

  • EN 1504 series (relevant parts): EN 1504-1, -2, -3, -4, -5, -7, -8, -10 and ENV 1504-9 (general principles).
  • Test standards referenced: prEN 1881, EN 1015-17, EN 12614, prEN 1544, EN 1767, EN 1877-1/2, EN 13294 etc.

EN 1504-6:2006 helps ensure that rebar anchoring products meet measurable safety, durability and performance criteria - essential for reliable concrete repair and structural continuity.
