Overview

SIST EN 1175-1:1998/kFprA1:2010 outlines the general electrical requirements for battery-powered industrial trucks, focusing on safety measures essential for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of these vehicles. This European standard, harmonized through the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), applies to all types of industrial trucks powered by batteries and used for material handling and internal transport purposes.

The standard is designed to provide a consistent framework for manufacturers, operators, and regulatory authorities to ensure that battery-powered industrial trucks meet stringent safety and performance criteria in accordance with relevant EU Directives, particularly the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.

Key Topics

  • General Electrical Safety Requirements
The standard addresses safety principles for the electrical systems of battery-powered industrial trucks, including aspects related to control systems, emergency switching-off, and parameter management.

  • Significant Hazards and Risk Mitigation
Identification and management of significant hazards associated with battery charging, human error, programming errors, electromagnetic and non-ionizing radiation, and potential functional disorders.

  • System Controls and Fail-Safe Operation
Requirements for critical truck functions such as travel controls, steering, speed limitation, load handling, tiller control, and slack wire rope/chain systems to prevent unsafe conditions.

  • Electromagnetic Compatibility and Radiation
Ensures that trucks meet the necessary requirements for electromagnetic emissions and immunity, and manages risks associated with non-ionizing radiation, especially concerning the use of devices like radio transmitters or RFID readers.

  • Battery Safety and Charging Procedures
Specifies information to be included in instruction manuals regarding battery charging, ventilation of charging areas, and precautions to minimize the risk of explosion during battery regeneration.

  • Compliance with EU Directives
Supports the essential safety requirements defined under the EU Machinery Directive and associates harmonized criteria for conformity assessment and CE marking.

Applications

SIST EN 1175-1:1998/kFprA1:2010 is widely applicable across industries that use battery-powered industrial trucks such as:

  • Warehousing and Distribution Centers
Ensuring safe operation of electric forklifts and pallet trucks during material handling activities.

  • Manufacturing Facilities
Maintaining compliance and reducing risks in internal transport operations using battery-operated trucks.

  • Retail and Logistics
Standardizing safety protocols for battery-powered vehicles used for stock pick-up and delivery tasks.

  • Healthcare and Food Industry
Addressing specific needs related to non-ionizing radiation protections, especially where sensitive equipment or personnel with medical implants may be present.

Operators, manufacturers, and safety managers rely on this standard to maintain high levels of safety, minimize accident risks, optimize maintenance practices, and comply with regulatory requirements.

Related Standards

Organizations implementing SIST EN 1175-1:1998/kFprA1:2010 should also consider these related standards for comprehensive safety and compliance:

  • EN ISO 12100-1:2003 and EN ISO 12100-2:2003: General principles for machinery safety and risk assessment.
  • EN ISO 13849-1:2008: Safety-related aspects of control systems.
  • EN 12895:2000: Electromagnetic compatibility for industrial trucks.
  • EN ISO 3691-1 and EN ISO 3691-5: Safety requirements and verification for self-propelled and pedestrian-propelled industrial trucks.
  • EN 1755, EN 12053, EN 13059, EN 1459: Additional safety and technical specifications for industrial trucks and their components.

Adhering to this suite of standards supports effective risk management and regulatory compliance within the industrial truck sector, ensuring safer battery-powered vehicles for modern logistics and manufacturing environments.
