Overview

oSIST prEN 1471:2014 defines standardized procedures for evaluating the overall change in appearance of textile floor coverings when subjected to use or testing. Developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST) and part of European harmonization efforts, this standard supports the flooring industry by providing a reliable and repeatable method to assess visual changes in carpet and textile flooring performance over time.

Assessing changes in appearance is essential for manufacturers, quality control laboratories, and certification bodies to ensure products meet expected durability and visual retention standards under commercial, residential, and industrial use conditions.

Key Topics

  • Assessment Methodology
The standard describes a procedure for visual assessment using standard digital image reference scales and large grey scales to compare specimens before and after exposure (fatiguing).
  • Scope of Evaluation
The approach covers overall appearance change, which may include changes in structure, texture, roughness, thickness, colour, pattern, and other surface features of textile floor coverings.
  • Grading System
The grading is based on reference scales (from grade 5 - no change, to grade 1 - extreme change) and considers both surface appearance and colour differences.
  • Assessor Qualifications
Requires assessments by at least three independent, experienced assessors to ensure objectivity and repeatability of results.
  • Standard Apparatus and Conditions
Specifies environmental and equipment requirements, such as a standardized viewing cabinet with controlled lighting, and use of digital image scales tailored for cut or loop pile carpets.
  • Reporting Requirements
Detailed reporting format to ensure transparency and traceability in test results.

Applications

This standard is widely utilized in sectors where textile floor coverings are prevalent and their sustained appearance is critical:

  • Product Development & R&D
Enables manufacturers to benchmark textile floor covering prototypes for appearance retention, guiding product design and material selection.
  • Quality Assurance & Production Control
Routine application of this assessment helps manufacturers monitor batch consistency and ensure compliance with internal and external quality standards.
  • Certification & Market Entry
Conformity to oSIST prEN 1471:2014 is often required for CE marking, market acceptance, and to meet project specifications in the European Union and internationally.
  • Facility Management & Specification
Assists facility managers, architects, and specifiers in selecting flooring with proven long-term performance, especially in high-traffic or demanding environments such as offices, hotels, and educational institutions.
  • Dispute Resolution
Provides an objective framework for resolving complaints or warranty claims related to premature appearance change.

Related Standards

For comprehensive assessment and consistency in textile floor covering evaluation, oSIST prEN 1471:2014 relies on and complements several international standards:

  • EN 20105 A02 / ISO 105-A02 – Grey scale for assessing change in colour
  • ISO 105-A01 – General principles of testing colour fastness in textiles
  • ISO 2424 – Vocabulary for textile floor coverings
  • ISO 10361:2012 – Methods for producing appearance change using Vettermann drum and hexapod tumbler tester

Adhering to these standards ensures reliable, reproducible assessments of textile floor coverings, supporting product quality, regulatory compliance, and consumer confidence in the flooring industry.

Foreword
This document (prEN 1471:2014) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 134 “Resilient, textile
and laminate floor coverings”, the secretariat of which is held by NBN.
This document is currently submitted to the CEN Enquiry.
This document will supersede EN 1471:1996.
prEN 1471:2014 (E)
Introduction
In 1980, a number of areas of work for improving the methods of assessing changes in appearance of textile
floor coverings were agreed, including experiments aimed at developing the use of sets of fatigued specimens
as reference scales to assist in the assessment of the changes. Conclusions drawn from the results of inter-
laboratory trials indicated that carefully selected reference scales aided the assessment of appearance
changes in textile floor coverings. However, members expressed concern over the widespread introduction of
procedures based on reference scales because of possible problems such as constancy of production and
stability in use.
Further work was requested before the method was to be published as a full International Standard and a
Technical Report (type 2) describing the procedures for using reference scales to assist in the overall
assessment of appearance change was published in 1990. Subsequently a modified version of the
assessment procedure was adopted by CEN and has been published as EN 1471.
In 1996 ISO/TC 38 SC 12 decided to develop TR 9405 into a full International Standard describing the best
available method of subjective visual assessment of appearance retention testing. The first Draft International
Standard (DIS) reflected the progress made by both the CEN and ISO committees and the DIS.2 reflected
further progress in that it introduced the option of using digital image reference scales as an alternative to the
carpet sample reference scales.
Following assessments of the digital image reference scales by a number of laboratories in Europe and North
America, ISO/TC 38 SC 12 decided, in its meeting in November 1999 to issue for approval a Final Draft
International Standard (FDIS) in which the digital images were the only reference scales.
Assessments of the digital image reference scales by a number of laboratories in Europe, ISO/TC 219 WG1
decided, in its meeting in February 2012 to issue for approval a Draft International Standard (DIS) in which the
digital images were the only reference scales, only 3 scales will be used.
Nowadays we have seen that the evaluations we evolve with a new method, because of the use of the digital
scales.
