Overview

oSIST prEN 15254-1:2005 sets out the general framework for extending the application of fire resistance test results for non-loadbearing walls (partitions) in construction. Developed by SIST and based on the European standard EN 1364-1, this document defines essential parameters, rules, and methodologies to determine under what circumstances and to what extent test results can be applied to wall constructions that weren't directly tested.

The standard provides guidance to facilitate the safe and appropriate use of test data beyond the direct field of application while maintaining fire safety requirements. It is relevant for manufacturers, specifiers, fire test laboratories, and regulatory authorities seeking to optimize testing resources while ensuring compliance with fire resistance standards for building components.

Key Topics

  • Extended Application Principles
The standard describes how to use test results from EN 1364-1 to justify the fire resistance performance of similar, but untested, wall designs. It clarifies the distinction between direct field and extended field of application, introducing procedures for evaluating the impact of changes in design or material parameters.

  • Critical Parameters Influencing Fire Resistance
    Key parameters requiring evaluation include:

    • Thermal parameters (e.g., temperature-time curves)
    • Mechanical parameters (e.g., restraint against expansion, rotational restraint)
    • Constructional parameters (e.g., wall height, width, thickness, fixings, number of layers)
  • Assessment Methodology
The document outlines how to analyze changes factor-by-factor, considering possible interactions, to ensure maintained or adjusted fire performance (typically reported as integrity and insulation ratings, EI). Assessments may rely on empirical rules, calculation models, additional testing, or expert judgement-depending on the availability of supporting data.

  • Reporting Requirements
A comprehensive extended application analysis must be documented, including details of the tested specimen, reference tests, identified parameters and factors, influence analyses, justifications, and final conclusions on the revised classification and field of application.

Applications

oSIST prEN 15254-1:2005 is highly valued in multiple construction scenarios:

  • Design Flexibility for Manufacturers: Enables manufacturers to reduce the need for repetitive, costly fire resistance tests for minor design or material changes in partitions, supporting innovation and efficient product development.
  • Specifying Non-Loadbearing Walls: Architects and specifiers can confidently select or modify partition systems for specific projects, relying on established extended application frameworks to ensure ongoing compliance with relevant fire safety standards.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Authorities and safety assessors utilize the documented field of extended application to verify that construction products and building elements meet compulsory fire resistance requirements.
  • Testing and Certification: Test laboratories and certification bodies apply the standard’s methodology to produce robust, traceable reports for product declarations and market access across Europe.

Related Standards

This standard builds upon and refers to several important documents in the field of fire safety and construction products, including:

  • EN 1364-1: Fire resistance tests for non-loadbearing elements - Non-loadbearing walls
  • EN 1363-1/2: General requirements and additional procedures for fire resistance tests
  • EN 13501-2: Fire classification of construction products and building elements using data from fire resistance tests
  • EN ISO 13943: Vocabulary of fire safety
  • Eurocodes (ENV 1991-2-2, ENV 1992-1-2, etc.): Design of structures and their behavior during fire exposure

By adhering to the guidelines in oSIST prEN 15254-1:2005, stakeholders in the construction industry can ensure the consistent and safe application of fire resistance data for non-loadbearing walls, supporting both innovation and compliance with European fire safety regulations.
