General Information

Abstract

This document specifies a field method for the assessment of the surface density of various water-soluble salts on steel surfaces, before and/or after surface preparation, by conductometric determination. The individual surface densities of the salt composition like chlorides, sulphates, sodium, etc, cannot be determined by this method.
This method assesses only contaminants that forms an electrolyte (ions) when in contact with water. These represent the greater part of the contaminants.

Overview

oSIST prEN ISO 8502-9:2026 defines a standardized field method for assessing the surface density of water-soluble salts on steel substrates through conductometric (electrical conductivity) determination. Issued by SIST under ISO/TC 35/SC 12, this standard is especially relevant for surface preparation prior to applying paints or related protective products. By measuring the overall presence of water-soluble ionic contaminants, this method helps ensure steel surfaces are sufficiently clean to provide optimal coating performance and prolonged substrate protection.

Key Topics

  • Field Assessment of Contaminants
    The standard specifies a practical field test to measure the total water-soluble salts on steel surfaces, both before and after surface preparation methods such as blasting or cleaning.

  • Conductometric Determination
    Using a conductometer, the method quantifies the presence of water-soluble salts by measuring the conductivity of a solution extracted from the steel surface. It delivers a summed value of all ionic species, which forms electrolytes when dissolved in water.

  • Scope of Measurement
    The methodology detects total water-soluble salts but does not differentiate the specific composition (e.g., individual levels of chlorides, sulphates, or sodium). It encompasses the principal contaminants relevant to field and industrial conditions.

  • Accuracy Considerations
    The method’s reliability largely depends on variables such as temperature, sample preparation, type of conductometer, and the salt composition.

Applications

  • Surface Preparation Quality Control
    Ensuring minimal salt contamination prior to the application of coatings is critical for steel corrosion prevention. High levels of water-soluble salts like chlorides and sulphates are known to cause coating blistering and premature failure.

  • Onsite Field Testing
    The field method described allows for quick, practical assessment on-site or in workshops, providing immediate data to guide cleaning, preparation, or verification steps during protective maintenance or new construction.

  • Industrial Sectors
    Industries including shipbuilding, civil infrastructure, oil and gas, and construction frequently employ this test to validate surface cleanliness as part of project specifications or maintenance procedures.

  • Specification Compliance
    Meeting national or international specifications often requires documented assessment of salt contamination. This standard provides a harmonized method for such reporting and quality assurance.

Related Standards

  • ISO 8502 Series (Assessment of Surface Cleanliness)
    • ISO 8502-6: Field test for the extraction of soluble contaminants using adhesive cells (Bresle Patch method)
    • ISO 8501: Visual assessment of surface cleanliness
    • ISO 8503: Determination of surface roughness characteristics of blast-cleaned steel substrates
    • ISO 8504: Methods for surface preparation

These related standards offer complementary guidance covering the preparation and evaluation of steel surfaces before the application of paints or other coatings. For best results, practitioners should use ISO 8502-9 in conjunction with these documents to ensure a comprehensive approach to surface preparation and assessment.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).

Introduction
The performance of protective coatings of paint and related products applied to steel is significantly
affected by the state of the steel surface immediately prior to painting. The principal factors that are known
to influence this performance are:
a) the presence of rust and mill scale;
b) the presence of surface contaminants, including salts, dust, oils and greases;
c) the surface profiles.
ISO 8501, ISO 8502 and ISO 8503 have been prepared to provide methods of assessing these factors, while
ISO 8504 provides guidance on the preparation methods that are available for cleaning steel substrates,
indicating the capabilities of each in attaining specified levels of cleanliness.
These International Standards do not contain recommendations for the protective coating systems to be
applied to the steel surface. Neither do they contain recommendations for the surface quality requirements
for specific situations even though surface quality can have a direct influence on the choice of protective
coating to be applied and on its performance. Such recommendations are found in other documents such as
national standards and codes of practice. It is be necessary for the users of these International Standards to
ensure that the qualities specified are:
— compatible and appropriate both for the environmental conditions to which the steel is exposed and for
the protective coating system to be used, and
— within the capability of the cleaning procedure specified.
The four International Standards referred to above deal with the following aspects of preparation of steel
substrates before application of paints and related products:
— ISO 8501, Visual assessment of surface cleanliness;
— ISO 8502, Tests for the assessment of surface cleanliness;
— ISO 8503, Surface roughness characteristics of blast-cleaned steel substrates;
— ISO 8504, Surface preparation methods.
Each of these International Standards is in turn divided into separate parts.
This document describes a field method for the assessment of the total amount of water-soluble salts by
conductometric determination, the salts being reported as one value. Conductivity can be caused by multiple
salts. These can include both corrosion-promoting salts such as chlorides
