Glass in building - Product standard for structural and/or ultra-violet resistant sealant (for use with structural sealant glazing and/or insulating glass units with exposed seals)

This European Standard covers the evaluation of conformity and the factory production control of sealant for the intrinsic capabilities when intended to apply for:
   manufacturing of insulating glass units where ultra-violet resistance and/or mechanical resistance (structural use) of the insulating glass edge seal is required:
   required level of resistance to UV exposure will depend on the degree of exposure to UV radiation with or without protection;
   when the outer seal of the insulating glass has a structural function and/or is exposed to the UV radiation without any protection, only silicone based sealants are permitted;
   when the outer seal of the insulating glass has no structural function and is protected from direct exposure to UV radiation, organic and silicone based sealants are permitted;
   manufacturing of factory made structural sealant glazing elements when referred to by the relevant European Standards and ETAGs.
   Only silicone based sealants are permitted;
   assembling of glass products into or onto supports, where also ultra-violet resistance and/or mechanical resistance (structural use) of the seal is required under controlled environmental conditions as described in Clause 5 of EN 13022–2:2006.
   Only silicone based sealants are permitted.
This European Standard also specifies requirements concerning seals and bonds of sealant in conformity with this European Standard.
   When bonding of sealant to a non-glass substrate is tested, the substrate, which means the material, its treatment and its preparations for bonding, as applied or to be applied on the work is used in testing (coating of coated glass is considered as a non-glass substrate).
This European Standard contains other aspects of importance of trade.

Overview

SIST EN 15434:2006/kFprA1:2009 is a European product standard specific to the glass in building sector, setting out requirements for structural and/or ultra-violet (UV) resistant sealants. These sealants are critical in applications such as structural sealant glazing and insulating glass units (IGUs) with exposed edge seals. The standard outlines both the evaluation of conformity and the principles of factory production control for these sealants, with an emphasis on their mechanical strength, resistance to UV radiation, and proper use within building envelopes.

This standard is of substantial practical value for manufacturers, specifiers, and quality assurance teams in the glass and building industry, ensuring product reliability and safety in demanding environmental conditions.

Key Topics

  • Sealant Performance Requirements:

    • Assessment of UV resistance and mechanical (structural) properties of sealants.
    • Specification of only silicone-based sealants for exposed and/or structural uses, reflecting their superior durability under UV exposure.
    • Permitting organic sealants when seals are non-structural and reliably protected from UV, such as through glass layers or opaque coatings.
  • Application Scenarios:
    The standard describes appropriate sealant use in:

    • Manufacturing of insulating glass units requiring UV and/or structural performance at edge seals.
    • Factory production of structural sealant glazing components, referencing relevant European Standards and technical approval guidelines.
    • Installation of glass products onto supports where controlled environments as described in EN 13022-2 are applicable.
  • Conformity Assessment & Factory Production Control:

    • Production processes must include thorough evaluation of sealant performance and regular quality controls.
    • Ensures consistency in manufacturing and compliance with requirements for sealing and bonding performance.
    • Includes test methods and acceptance criteria for mechanical and UV resistance.
  • Testing on Various Substrates:

    • When sealants are bonded to non-glass surfaces (such as coated glass or metal), all specific substrate conditions, treatments, and preparations required are covered during conformity testing.

Applications

This standard directly supports the following practical uses:

  • Insulating Glass Units (IGUs):
    For IGUs with seals exposed to sunlight or performing a structural role, only tested silicone sealants are permissible, ensuring longevity and safety. When UV protection is built into the assembly (e.g., by glass interlayers or opaque covers), the use of organic sealants is allowed, broadening material selection.

  • Structural Sealant Glazing:
    Used in curtain walling, facades, and architectural features where glass panels are adhered to building frames, the standard ensures the structural integrity and weather resistance of these assemblies.

  • Specialized Installations:
    Suitable for assembling glass products onto supports in controlled factory settings, crucial for prefabricated construction systems and off-site manufacturing environments.

Related Standards

Professionals using SIST EN 15434:2006/kFprA1:2009 should also be aware of related standards that complement or provide referenced guidelines, including:

  • EN 1279-4:
    For sealants fully protected from UV radiation in IGUs.
  • EN 13022-2:
    Outlines environmental conditions for the assembly of glass elements in controlled environments.
  • EN ISO 4892-2:
    Specifies testing methods for UV resistance using Xenon-arc lamps.
  • EN ISO 9227:
    Defines corrosion testing in artificial atmospheres via salt spray methods.
  • EN ISO 9001:
    Sets out requirements for quality management systems, reinforcing the importance of systematic production control.

By following SIST EN 15434 and its related standards, glass manufacturers and façade contractors ensure optimal performance, durability, and safety in modern glazing applications, supporting compliance across Europe and enhancing the quality and reliability of building envelopes.
