Overview

SIST EN 13589:2018 is a European standard dedicated to the determination of the tensile properties of bitumen and bituminous binders, with a particular focus on polymer-modified bitumens. The standard specifies the force ductility method, a key procedure for evaluating bituminous binders used in road construction and infrastructure projects. This testing method assesses the quality of bitumen by measuring tensile strength and ductility characteristics after various conditions such as unaged, aged, residual, or recovered states. The force ductility test is crucial in ensuring that bituminous materials meet required performance and durability standards.

Due to the involvement of hazardous materials and operations, adherence to proper safety and health practices is essential when applying this standard.

Key Topics

  • Tensile Properties Testing
SIST EN 13589:2018 establishes a method to determine the tensile characteristics of bitumen, considering different material states. Tensile force and elongation under controlled conditions reveal the flexibility and adhesive properties of the binder.

  • Force Ductility Method
The standard details the use of a ductilometer to stretch a molded bitumen sample at a constant speed and temperature. By measuring the force required and the resulting elongation until fracture or a set elongation is achieved, it enables the calculation of deformation and cohesion energy.

  • Deformation and Cohesion Energy
The work performed on the test specimen is expressed as deformation energy, while cohesion energy is used as a criterion to assess binder quality. The difference in cohesion energy between specified elongation points provides an objective parameter for quality assessment.

  • Sample Preparation and Test Conditions
The document covers sample acquisition, preparation, conditioning, and testing, ensuring standardized conditions for repeatable and reliable results. It also specifies requirements for equipment accuracy and test environment control.

  • Precision and Reporting
Repeatability and reproducibility criteria are defined, supporting the reliability of test results across laboratories. The standard also outlines the minimum required information to be included in every test report.

Applications

SIST EN 13589:2018 is essential for:

  • Quality Control in Road Construction
Ensuring that bitumen and polymer-modified binders used in road surfaces possess the required tensile and ductility properties for long-term performance.

  • Product Development and Specification
Manufacturers and researchers utilize this standard to develop new bituminous products and to verify if they meet specification requirements.

  • Performance Assessment of Modified Binders
The force ductility test is crucial for evaluating the effects of polymer modification, aging, or recovery processes on bitumen performance.

  • Comparative Analysis
The standardized methodology enables reliable comparison between different bituminous binder samples, material sources, and formulations.

Related Standards

For comprehensive bitumen testing, the following standards are frequently used in conjunction with SIST EN 13589:2018:

  • EN 58: Bitumen and bituminous binders – Sampling bituminous binders
Covers procedures for proper sample collection.

  • EN 12594: Bitumen and bituminous binders – Preparation of test samples
Addresses sample conditioning for consistent testing.

  • EN 13398: Bitumen and bituminous binders – Determination of the elastic recovery of modified bitumen
Complements tensile testing with elastic recovery measurements.

  • EN 13587: Bitumen and bituminous binders – Determination of tensile properties by the tensile test method
A related method for assessing tensile characteristics.

  • EN 1431: Bitumen and bituminous binders – Determination of residual binder and oil distillate by distillation
Relevant for evaluating binder properties after emulsion tests.

SIST EN 13589:2018 supports compliance, product quality, and the reliable performance of bituminous materials in construction and maintenance projects, making it a fundamental reference for professionals in asphalt, pavement, and material testing sectors.
