Overview

oSIST prEN 14178-1:2017 is a European standard developed by SIST, focusing on glass products for use in building applications. This part of the standard specifically addresses basic alkaline earth silicate float glass, outlining chemical composition, key physical and mechanical properties, as well as key dimensional and quality requirements. The standard ensures a consistent and reliable approach to classifying float glass for construction, providing clear specifications regarding optical and visual faults. The requirements apply to glass delivered in jumbo sizes, split sizes, supplied sizes, or cut sizes intended for final end use, but exclude small cut sizes below 100 mm or a surface area less than 0.05 m².

Key Topics

  • Chemical Composition
The standard defines basic alkaline earth silicate glass by its principal constituents, including silicon, calcium, potassium, aluminium, zirconium, and others. The chemical profile supports stable physical and optical performance suitable for architecture and construction.

  • Physical and Mechanical Properties
Float glass covered by this standard is characterized by properties such as density, Young’s modulus, bending strength, specific heat capacity, coefficient of linear expansion, and thermal conductivity. It emphasizes that these properties remain stable over time and under environmental exposure, making the material reliable for building use.

  • Dimensional Requirements
Specifications include tight tolerances for thickness, length, width, and squareness of glass sheets. The standard prescribes measurement techniques and allowable tolerances to support consistency and interchangeability in construction projects.

  • Quality and Faults
The standard outlines methods for identifying and classifying both optical faults (such as distortion) and visual faults (including spot and linear faults). It defines acceptance levels for these faults depending on product size, ensuring the delivered float glass meets minimum optical and visual quality requirements.

Applications

Float glass defined by oSIST prEN 14178-1:2017 is widely used in the building and construction sector. Typical applications include:

  • Windows and Facades: Ensures high transparency and clarity for architectural glazing, curtain walls, and commercial windows.
  • Doors and Partitions: Provides reliable flatness and optical quality for interior glass doors and office partitions.
  • Structural Glazing: Acts as a base material for laminated, insulated, and coated glass products used in high-performance building envelopes.
  • Decorative Glass: Serves as a substrate for additional processing such as tinting, etching, or printing, supporting interior design features.

By adhering to this standard, manufacturers and builders can ensure that the float glass chosen for building applications meets rigorous chemical, mechanical, and aesthetic criteria.

Related Standards

  • EN 410: Glass in building - Determination of luminous and solar characteristics of glazing.
  • ISO 9385: Glass and glass-ceramics - Knoop hardness test.
  • EN 1288-1 & EN 1288-2: Determination of the bending strength of glass.
  • prEN 16612: Calculation of the lateral load resistance of glass panes.
  • EN 572-2 & EN 572-8: Standards referenced for dimensional tolerances and defect acceptance.

These related standards further support reliable testing, classification, and use of float glass in the built environment.
