Overview
SIST EN 772-14:2002 specifies a standardized test method for determining the moisture movement-including expansion and shrinkage-of aggregate concrete and manufactured stone masonry units. This European standard ensures consistent measurement of dimensional changes in masonry units due to variations in moisture content, which can significantly affect the long-term durability and structural performance of masonry elements in buildings.
Moisture movement testing enables manufacturers, engineers, and quality controllers to assess how concrete and stone masonry units behave when exposed to extreme moisture conditions. This is crucial in preventing structural issues such as cracking or warping in masonry construction.
Key Topics
- Scope of the Standard: Focuses on determining the dimensional change (expansion and shrinkage) in masonry units made from aggregate concrete or manufactured stone, between two specified moisture extremes.
- Sample Preparation: Details on how to select, store, and condition masonry unit samples before testing to ensure representative and repeatable results.
- Testing Procedure:
- Measurement under laboratory-controlled temperature and humidity
- Immersion of selected specimens in water to assess expansion
- Oven drying of other specimens to evaluate shrinkage
- Precision gauging of dimensional change using calibrated equipment
- Result Expression: Calculation of coefficients for moisture expansion, drying shrinkage, and overall movement, as well as moisture content, reported in standard units (mm/m).
- Reporting Requirements: Specifies all information and data to be included in the test report to facilitate traceability and comparison.
- Quality and Traceability: Reinforcement of reporting protocols, including sample identification, production and testing dates, and relevant conditioning and measurement data.
Applications
Utilizing SIST EN 772-14:2002 provides practical value across several stages of the construction materials life cycle:
- Product Development and Quality Control: Manufacturers of aggregate concrete and manufactured stone masonry units use this method to verify product performance and compliance with European building codes.
- Structural Design: Engineers and architects incorporate moisture movement data to select materials less susceptible to problematic expansion or shrinkage, reducing risk in final construction.
- Specification Compliance: Contractors and project managers ensure masonry products meet required standards for dimensional stability, essential for longevity and safety of masonry structures.
- Research and Testing: Testing laboratories and institutions conducting comparative studies on masonry materials rely on this standard for consistent, replicable measurement techniques.
Awareness of moisture movement characteristics helps minimize future problems such as cracking, spalling, and misalignment in walls, facades, and loadbearing masonry components, especially in environments prone to significant humidity variations.
Related Standards
For a comprehensive understanding of masonry unit performance considering moisture influence and related properties, consider the following associated standards:

- EN 771-5: Specification for masonry units - Part 5: Manufactured stone masonry units
- EN 772 Series: Broader methods of test for masonry units, covering structural, durability, and performance characteristics
