Overview
SIST EN 485-3:2004 specifies the dimensional and form tolerances for hot-rolled aluminium and aluminium alloy sheet, strip, and plate products intended for general engineering applications. The standard applies to wrought aluminium and aluminium alloys in thicknesses ranging from 2.5 mm up to and including 400 mm. It ensures product uniformity and quality by detailing tolerances for thickness, width, length, flatness, lateral curvature, and squareness. The standard excludes products in coiled form intended for further rolling (reroll stock), as well as special products and applications such as corrugated sheets and aerospace components, which are managed by separate standards.
Key Topics
- Thickness Tolerances: Defines allowable deviations in product thickness across a wide range of widths. Ensures consistent material thickness for engineering reliability.
- Width and Length Tolerances: Specifies permissible variances for width and length, supporting the production of precisely dimensioned flat-rolled aluminium products.
- Flatness and Lateral Curvature: Establishes criteria for acceptable flatness and straightness, reducing issues in downstream forming or assembly.
- Squareness: Determines allowable differences in diagonal lengths to avoid geometric distortion in sheet and plate products.
- Product Scope: Applies to hot-rolled aluminium and aluminium alloy products for general engineering but excludes reroll stock, special finishes, and aerospace products.
Applications
SIST EN 485-3:2004 is crucial for industries and applications requiring reliable dimensional tolerances in aluminium and aluminium alloy products. Typical uses include:
- General engineering and fabrication: Provides trusted standards for creating machinery, structures, and transport equipment where consistent sizing is critical.
- Metal processing and manufacturing: Supports quality assurance for companies supplying cut or sawn plate, sheet, and strip to further fabrication or machining.
- Construction: Ensures compatibility and fit for panels, fascias, and other architectural elements made from aluminium or aluminium alloy.
- Quality control and inspection: Enables manufacturers and purchasers to specify and verify compliance with established European tolerances.
By adhering to these guidelines, organizations achieve greater consistency, reduced waste, and improved interchangeability in aluminium engineering components.
Related Standards
- EN 485-1: Aluminium and aluminium alloys - Sheet, strip and plate - Part 1: Technical conditions for inspection and delivery. This standard complements EN 485-3, covering inspection and delivery requirements.
- EN 485-2: Aluminium and aluminium alloys - Sheet, strip and plate - Part 2: Mechanical properties. Focuses on the mechanical property requirements for these products.
- EN 485-4: Aluminium and aluminium alloys - Sheet, strip and plate - Part 4: Tolerances on dimensions and form for cold-rolled products. Offers a parallel framework for cold-rolled aluminium products.
- Specialized Standards: Separate standards exist for products such as reroll stock, embossed or corrugated sheet, and aerospace-grade materials.
Practical Value
- Ensures uniform product quality across the supply chain
- Facilitates European and international trade in aluminium flat products
- Reduces ambiguity and risk of material non-conformity
- Supports efficient production and downstream processing
- Promotes compatibility with a broad range of manufacturing and assembly processes
SIST EN 485-3:2004 is a key reference for those specifying, producing, or inspecting hot-rolled aluminium and aluminium alloy sheets, strips, and plates, ensuring products meet recognized tolerances for dimensional accuracy and form stability. This enhances manufacturing reliability and enables seamless integration into a wide variety of industrial and engineering applications.
