Tests on electric and optical fibre cables under fire conditions -- Part 1-3: Test for vertical flame propagation for a single insulated wire or cable - Procedure for determination of flaming droplets/particles

Specifies a test procedure for assessment of falling flaming droplets/ particles when a single vertical electrical insulated conductor or cable, or optical fibre cable, is subjected to defined fire conditions. NOTE - Testing to EN 60332-1-3 may be performed simultaneously with that to EN 60332-1-2, if required. Recommended requirements for performance are given in Annex A. EN 60332-1-3 specifies the use of a 1 kW pre-mixed flame and is for general use, except that the procedure specified may not be suitable for the testing of small single insulated conductors or cables of less than 0,5 mm2 total cross-section because the conductor melts before the test is completed, or for the testing of small optical fibre cables because the cable is broken before the test is completed. Has the status of a group safety publication in accordance with IEC Guide 104.

Priporočene zahteve glede lastnosti so navedene v dodatku A.

Overview

SIST EN 60332-1-3:2005 is a critical European standard that specifies the test procedure for assessing the behavior of electric and optical fibre cables when exposed to fire, specifically focusing on the vertical flame propagation and the determination of flaming droplets and particles. Published by SIST and harmonized with IEC 60332-1-3:2004, this standard addresses safety and fire performance of cables used in various electrical and communication infrastructures. By establishing consistent test methods, it supports enhanced fire safety and compliance across industries.

Key Topics

  • Scope of Testing: The standard applies to single insulated electric wires, cables, and optical fibre cables positioned vertically under defined fire conditions.
  • Vertical Flame Propagation: It determines how flames travel along a single cable and observes the production of flaming droplets or particles.
  • Test Procedure:
    • Utilizes a 1 kW pre-mixed flame applied to the cable sample.
    • Details specific apparatus and sample conditioning requirements.
    • Involves placement of filter paper to record ignition from falling flaming debris.
  • Assessment Criteria: The key outcome is whether the filter paper beneath the test cable ignites, indicating failure due to flaming droplets/particles.
  • Limitations: The procedure is not suitable for very small cables (under 0.5 mm² cross-section) or small optical fibre cables, as these may fail mechanically before meaningful test completion.
  • Simultaneous Testing: The method can be performed alongside EN 60332-1-2 to maximize efficiency during compliance checks.

Applications

SIST EN 60332-1-3:2005 is highly relevant to industries and sectors where cable fire safety is critical:

  • Electrical Installations: Used by manufacturers and installers to certify that cables meet fire resistance and flame propagation requirements.
  • Building and Construction: Essential for compliance in commercial, residential, and public buildings, helping reduce the risk of fire spread through cabling.
  • Transport Infrastructure: Applicable in railway, marine, and aviation settings to ensure passenger safety and regulatory adherence.
  • Telecommunications: Ensures that optical fibre cables in communication networks maintain performance and safety under fire exposure.
  • Products Certification and Market Access: Allows manufacturers to demonstrate conformity to EU fire safety directives and CE marking requirements.

Complying with this standard helps minimize property damage and risk to human life by restricting the generation of flaming droplets that could ignite secondary fires.

Related Standards

SIST EN 60332-1-3:2005 forms part of a broader suite of cable fire testing standards. Related documents include:

  • EN 60332-1-1: Focuses on test apparatus for vertical flame propagation of single cables.
