Overview
SIST EN 1014-4:2011 is a European standard published by the Slovenski inštitut za standardizacijo (SIST) that provides a reliable method for determining the water-extractable phenols content of creosote, specifically using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). This standard is part of the broader EN 1014 series, which addresses procedures for sampling and analysis of creosote and creosoted timber. The method outlined is applicable to creosotes with a water-extractable phenols content exceeding 10 grams per kilogram. It is an essential reference for laboratories, wood preservative manufacturers, and quality assurance professionals working with creosoted timber.
Key Topics
Scope
- Specifies an HPLC method for identifying and quantifying water-extractable phenols in creosote.
- Ensures high accuracy for creosote samples with more than 10 g/kg water-extractable phenols.
Methodology
- Uses reversed-phase HPLC with isocratic elution, followed by UV detection at 276 nm.
- Calibration against standard phenol solutions allows for precise quantification.
- Separate preparation procedures for large and small samples ensure flexibility.
Sample Preparation
- Large samples (typically ≥250 g creosote): extraction using water, phase separation, and filtration.
- Small samples (2-5 g creosote): adapted extraction for trace material availability.
Precision and Reporting
- Provides criteria for repeatability (results by one operator) and reproducibility (between laboratories).
- Mandates comprehensive test reporting, including sample identification, preparation, results, and any deviations.
Applications
Quality Control in Wood Preservation
- Validates creosote batches to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements on phenol content.
- Supports manufacturers in maintaining product consistency and safety standards.
Environmental and Safety Assessments
- Assesses the leachable phenolic compounds from creosoted wood, which is vital for evaluating environmental impact and worker safety.
- Analytical results may be used in environmental compliance documentation and material data sheets.
Research and Development
- Facilitates innovation and formulation adjustments in wood protective treatments.
- Serves academic and industrial researchers analyzing phenolic compound migration from treated timber.
