Overview
oSIST prEN 755-8:2026 is a draft European standard developed by SIST, focusing on aluminium and aluminium alloy extruded porthole tubes. This document specifies tolerances on dimensions and form for porthole tubes produced via the porthole/bridge method, with outside diameters (OD) from 8 mm to 450 mm or cross sections within a circumscribing circle (CD) from 10 mm to 350 mm, supplied in straight lengths. The standard applies only to tubes made by the porthole process, not covering seamless tubes, coiled tubes, or coiled tubes cut to length. Temper designations referenced align with EN 515.
This standard is essential for manufacturers, suppliers, and purchasers of aluminium extrusions, ensuring uniformity and reliability in tube dimensions and form, fundamental for quality control and interoperability in various engineering applications.
Key Topics
Dimensional Tolerances
- Provides allowable deviation limits for outside and inside diameters, wall thickness, and width across flats for round and non-round extruded porthole tubes.
- Includes specific tolerance tables based on size, alloy groups, and temper.
Form Tolerances
- Defines allowable deviations in straightness, convexity-concavity, twist, angularity, and squareness for both round and non-round profiles.
- Specifies tolerances for corner and fillet radii as well as guidelines for surface dents, especially for tubes with large diameter-to-thickness ratios.
Alloy Groups
- Categorizes alloys into two groups (Group I and II), reflecting different manufacturing difficulties and tolerance application.
Ordering and Measurement Guidance
- Outlines how tolerances apply depending on which dimensional parameters (OD, ID, wall thickness) are specified.
- Provides guidance for expressing and measuring wall thickness variation (eccentricity) based on ordering method.
Exclusions
- Clearly states the types of tubes and production methods outside the scope, such as seamless tubes (EN 755-7) and coiled tubes (EN 13957).
Applications
The requirements in oSIST prEN 755-8:2026 are vital wherever precise aluminium or aluminium alloy tube dimensions and consistent form are necessary. Typical application areas include:
- Automotive Industry
- For structural, safety, and heat exchanger components where dimensional accuracy and repeatability are critical.
- Construction
- In architectural extrusions, curtain walling, and facade elements requiring tight tolerances to ensure seamless installation and performance.
- Aerospace and Transportation
- Lightweight, high-precision tube extrusions for airframes and interiors.
- General Engineering
- Machinery, equipment framing, and pneumatic or hydraulic systems demanding robust, well-defined porthole tubes.
- Renewable Energy
- Heat exchanger and solar panel framing applications, where tube uniformity impacts efficiency and assembly.
By adhering to these standardised tolerances, manufacturers and end-users benefit from improved component interchangeability, enhanced quality, and reduced risk of rework or assembly issues.

4 Alloy groups
For the purpose of this document, the alloys are distributed into two groups, Group I and Group II which
correspond to varying degrees of difficulty when manufacturing the products. The division into group I
and group II of the most commonly used general engineering alloys is specified in Table 1. Grouping of
other alloys is subject to agreement between supplier and purchaser.

5 Tolerances on dimensions
5.1 General
When outside diameter OD, inside diameter ID, and wall thickness t (or their equivalent dimensions in
other than round tube) are all specified, standard tolerances shall apply to any two of these dimensions,
but not to all three. As a result, the purchaser shall only state two nominal dimensions on any given order.
5.2 Diameter - Round tube
Mean diameter is defined as the average of two diameter measurements taken at right angles to each
other at any position along the length.
The maximum allowable deviation of diameter at any point from the specified diameter is the maximum
difference measured at any point along the length of the tube i.e. it is inclusive of any ovality in the cross
section.
The tolerances on diameter are specified in Table 2.
As detailed in EN 755-1:2016, Clause 4, if the original order does not make clear the nature of the
diameter tolerances required, the supplier shall interpret them as inclusive of any ovality (i.e. maximum
allowable deviation at any point from the specified diameter in Table 2). However, the diameter
tolerances may be expressed as both mean and inclusive of ovality if this is specifically requested by the
purchaser.
