Overview

SIST EN 50131-2-6:2009/IS1:2014 is a European standard developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST) that specifies requirements for opening contact detectors (magnetic contacts) used in alarm systems, specifically intrusion and hold-up systems. This standard addresses both wired and wireless magnetic opening contacts, outlining requirements for use in indoor and outdoor environments across four environmental classes. It provides guidance for security grades 1 through 4, as defined in EN 50131-1.

The standard ensures that detectors operate correctly within their designated security grade, and allows for additional, non-interfering functions. It is a key document for manufacturers, installers, and certifiers of magnetic opening contact detectors, as well as for security professionals responsible for specifying alarm system components.

Key Topics

  • Security Grades: Covers grades 1 to 4 for intrusion and hold-up alarm systems, ensuring appropriate levels of protection based on application and security needs.
  • Wired and Wireless Devices: Applies to both hardwired and wireless (wire-free) magnetic opening contact detectors.
  • Environmental Classes: Includes requirements for detectors used in a range of environments, both internal and external, referring to EN 50130-5.
  • Mandatory Functions: Detectors must fulfill all functions required for their specified security grade, while optional features may be added if they do not impact mandatory operations.
  • Test Procedures: Provides requirements and clarifications for test magnets, ensuring reproducibility and backward compatibility during laboratory assessment.
  • Definition of Detector: Both parts of the magnetic opening contact (the magnet and the switch) are referred to collectively as the detector in the standard.

Applications

The provisions of SIST EN 50131-2-6:2009/IS1:2014 are essential for:

  • Alarm System Manufacturers: Ensuring magnetic opening contact detectors comply with European security and environmental standards for reliable performance.
  • System Designers and Installers: Selecting appropriate detectors for specific risk environments and security grades, enhancing the effectiveness of intrusion and hold-up alarm systems.
  • Testing Laboratories: Referencing standardized procedures for reproducible, stable testing of magnetic contact detectors, including selection and calibration of test magnets.
  • Compliance and Certification Bodies: Assessing devices for conformity with European directives related to alarm and security systems.

Practical use of this standard leads to increased security, reduced false alarms, and consistent performance of alarm components across varying environmental conditions.

Related Standards

  • EN 50131-1: Alarm systems - Intrusion and hold-up systems – Part 1: System requirements (defines security grades referenced by this standard).
  • EN 50130-5: Alarm systems - Environmental test methods (specifies environmental classes for detectors’ operational environments).
  • EN 60404-5: Magnetic materials – Methods of measurement of magnetic properties (referenced for test magnet requirements).
  • EN 60404-14 / IEC 60404-14: Methods of measurement of the magnetic dipole moment (supports calibration standards for test magnets).
  • IEC 60404-8-1: Specifications for magnetically hard materials used in forming test magnets for detector assessment.

Ensuring compliance with SIST EN 50131-2-6:2009/IS1:2014 advances consistent standards in the European security industry and aligns with international best practices for alarm systems and their components.
