Overview

SIST EN 2702:2006 specifies the requirements for aluminium alloy AL-P6061 in temper T6 or T62, for drawn or extruded bars and sections with a diameter or width (a or D) less than or equal to 200 mm. Developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), this standard is part of the European aerospace series and aligns with EN 2702:2005. It ensures consistent quality and performance for aluminium alloy products used in aerospace engineering, enabling compliance across European and international aerospace supply chains.

Key Topics

  • Material Specification: Describes aluminium alloy AL-P6061, including allowable chemical composition ranges and necessary temper conditions (T6, T62).
  • Product Forms: Applies to drawn or extruded bars and sections, focusing on profiles with a or D ≤ 200 mm.
  • Delivery Conditions: Covers standard delivery states, such as as-drawn, as-extruded, and heat-treated (T6, T62), along with batch and marking requirements.
  • Testing and Inspection: Outlines minimal requirements for chemical, mechanical, and dimensional properties, as well as quality control for internal and external defects.
  • Reference to Related Standards: Utilizes standards such as EN 4258 (general metallic material standardization), EN 4400-3 (specifications for aluminium bars and sections), and EN 4500-2 (rules for aluminium alloy standards).

Applications

SIST EN 2702:2006 is primarily intended for the aerospace sector, where high-performance, reliable, and traceable aluminium alloys are essential for safety-critical, lightweight structures. Practical applications include:

  • Aircraft Structural Components: Main and secondary structural members such as frames, fuselage stringers, seat tracks, and floor beams.
  • Aerospace Fasteners and Connectors: Custom bars and extrusions for fasteners, brackets, and assembly hardware.
  • Precision Machined Parts: Drawn or extruded profiles for CNC-machined aerospace components, where mechanical property consistency is vital.
  • Prototype and Production Runs: Used by suppliers and manufacturers requiring compliance with European aerospace material specifications for both short-run and volume production.

The standard also offers value to industries with similar demanding requirements for aluminium alloys, such as automotive, railway, and defense sectors seeking to align their materials with proven aerospace-quality standards.

Related Standards

For comprehensive understanding and compliance, consider the following closely related standards:

  • EN 4258: Aerospace series - Metallic materials - General organization of standardization; provides overarching guidance on material standard classification and application.
  • EN 4400-3: Aerospace series - Aluminium and aluminium alloy wrought products - Technical specification - Part 3: Bar and section; details additional requirements for wrought aluminium products.
  • EN 4500-2: Aerospace series - Metallic materials - Rules for drafting and presentation of material standards - Part 2: Aluminium, aluminium alloys, and magnesium alloys; governs documentation and presentation.

Practical Value

Implementing SIST EN 2702:2006 ensures:

  • Consistent Material Quality: Defined chemical and mechanical properties assure performance and reliability in critical aerospace applications.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Satisfies European and international procurement requirements for aerospace components.
  • Process Efficiency: Streamlines manufacturing and inspection with standardized requirements, reducing quality assurance complexity.
  • Global Recognition: Facilitates trade and component interchangeability within the aerospace industry across European and international markets.

This standard is essential for aerospace manufacturers, suppliers, material buyers, and quality management professionals focused on high-strength, structurally reliable aluminium alloy components.
