Overview
SIST EN 4131:2026 specifies the requirements for bolts used in aerospace applications featuring a normal hexagonal head, coarse tolerance normal shank, and medium length thread. These bolts are manufactured from heat resisting nickel base alloy and coated using Aluminium IVD (Ion Vapor Deposition), ensuring high mechanical and environmental resistance. This standard provides a reliable classification for bolts rated at 1,250 MPa minimum tensile strength (at ambient temperature) / 425 °C maximum service temperature, supporting demanding aerospace environments.
Adhering to this standard helps ensure compatibility, safety, and performance for aerospace fasteners. The document covers dimensions, tolerances, material requirements, surface treatments, and manufacturer qualifications for consistent high-quality production.
Key Topics
- Bolt Configuration: Specifies hexagonal head, coarse tolerance shank, and medium length MJ thread as per ISO and EN standards.
- Material Specifications: Limits bolt material to certified heat resisting nickel base alloys, referencing key material standards (EN 2952, EN 3219, TR 3775).
- Surface Treatment: Requires Aluminium IVD coating in compliance with MIL-DTL-83488D, ensuring corrosion protection and thermal stability.
- Dimensions & Tolerances: Establishes detailed dimensions and tolerances per ISO 3193 and ISO 7913, guaranteeing interchangeability and structural integrity.
- Marking & Designation: Details requirements for product identification and traceability, including marking per EN 2424 and designation structure.
- Manufacturer Approval: Mandates manufacturer quality systems compliant with recognized aerospace requirements (e.g., EN 9100).
- Qualification of Products: Stipulates qualification processes following EN 9133 or equivalent standards for aerospace-grade fasteners.
Applications
SIST EN 4131:2026 is essential for:
- Aerospace Manufacturing: Used extensively in assembly of aircraft, spacecraft, and related structures where high strength and resistance to heat and corrosion are essential.
- Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO): Guides part selection and replacement in aerospace maintenance, optimizing safety, reliability, and compliance.
- Component Suppliers: Ensures fastener manufacturers and suppliers meet uniform technical criteria supporting international supply chains and procurement.
- Engineering & Design: Provides engineers with parameters for specifying bolts that withstand both high mechanical loads and elevated temperature conditions.
The use of heat resisting nickel base alloy and Aluminium IVD coating as specified in this standard offers enhanced durability, especially for critical joints exposed to aggressive aerospace service environments.
