Overview
SIST EN 3475-417:2009 is a European standard developed for the aerospace industry, focused on evaluating the fire resistance of electrical cables confined inside a harness as used in aircraft. Published by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), this standard provides a detailed test method to assess the performance and qualification of fire-resistant or fire-proof cables when integrated in harness configurations that accurately represent real aerospace installations. SIST EN 3475-417:2009 is referenced alongside EN 3475-100 and aligns with the broader EN 3475 series, which addresses test methods for electrical cables in aerospace applications.
Key Topics
- Fire Resistance Testing: Specifies a test procedure that subjects cables within a harness to a combination of flame exposure and vibration, simulating the challenging conditions cables may face in aircraft.
- Qualification of Cables: The goal is to qualify cables for use in harnesses, ensuring they offer required fire protection and electrical performance when grouped tightly as in actual aircraft applications.
- Representative Configurations: The standard describes harness configurations that mirror the variety of arrangements found in operational aircraft, supporting realistic and meaningful test results.
- Measurement Methods: Procedures for checking electrical continuity and insulation resistance during and after exposure are specified, ensuring cables continue to meet strict aerospace requirements.
- Test Equipment: Guidance is provided on the apparatus, including burners and vibrations fixtures compliant with ISO 2685 and related standards, for accurate and repeatable testing.
- Acceptance Criteria: Establishes performance benchmarks such as minimum insulation resistance to determine if cables meet fire resistance requirements.
Applications
SIST EN 3475-417:2009 supports a range of aerospace engineering and safety objectives:
- Aircraft Manufacturing: Ensures the reliability and safety of in-harness electrical systems in commercial and military aircraft.
- Quality Assurance: Assists manufacturers, testing laboratories, and certification bodies in verifying that cables and harnesses meet stringent fire protection criteria.
- Maintenance and Upgrades: Provides a benchmark for assessing replacement cables and harnesses during maintenance or retrofit projects, particularly where fire safety is critical.
- Design Optimization: Informs the design and selection of cable and harness systems for improved fire resistance and reliability.
- Regulatory Compliance: Supports compliance with European and international fire safety regulations for aerospace electrical systems.
Related Standards
The following standards provide additional guidance and support to SIST EN 3475-417:2009 in the context of aerospace cable testing and fire resistance:
- EN 3475-100: Aerospace series - Cables, electrical, aircraft use - Test methods - Part 100: General. (Primary companion document detailing general test principles.)
- EN 3475-408: Test methods for fire resistance of aircraft cables, including apparatus requirements and test conditions.
- EN 2346-002: Fire-resistant electrical cable specifications for the aerospace sector, including general requirements for operating temperatures.
- ISO 2685: Aircraft - Environmental test procedures for airborne equipment - Resistance to fire in designated fire zones, referenced for burner and vibration apparatus methods.
Including these standards helps organizations develop a robust, standards-compliant approach to electrical and fire safety in aerospace applications.
