Overview
SIST EN 933-4:2008 specifies the reference test method for determining the shape index of coarse aggregates. This particle shape measurement standard is essential for assessing aggregate geometry in construction materials, particularly in cases where type testing or dispute resolution is required. The standard applies to aggregates with particle size fractions between 4 mm and 63 mm. While the method is primarily a reference for official testing, it also supports the establishment of working relationships with alternative techniques for factory production control, as long as appropriate correlation with the reference method is ensured.
Adherence to SIST EN 933-4:2008 helps ensure reliable measurement of aggregate shape properties, contributing to material consistency and conformity with European and international quality standards.
Key Topics
- Scope: Defines the application of the method to coarse aggregates with size fractions di/Di, where Di ≤ 63 mm and di ≥ 4 mm.
- Test Principle: The shape index is determined by classifying particles according to the ratio of their length (L) to thickness (E). Particles with an L/E ratio greater than 3 are considered non-cubical.
- Reference Method: Serves as the definitive method for determining shape index in type testing and dispute scenarios.
- Alternative Methods: Permits use of other methods in routine production control, provided they are validated against the referenced test.
- Aggregate Sizing: The testing method involves sieving aggregates to isolate appropriate particle size fractions.
- Test Procedure: Specifies equipment (slide gauge, sieves, oven), preparation steps (drying to constant mass, sieving), and evaluation (measurement of individual particle dimensions).
- Data Reporting: Recommends comprehensive reporting, including sample identification, particle size fractions tested, and the calculated shape index.
Applications
The shape index determination outlined in SIST EN 933-4:2008 has broad applications within the construction and civil engineering industries. Key areas include:
- Aggregate Selection for Concrete and Asphalt: Aggregate shape influences workability, compaction, and durability. This standard assists in evaluating suitability for use in concrete, bituminous mixtures, and road base materials.
- Quality Control in Production: Used by aggregate producers for internal quality checks and to demonstrate conformity with specified requirements.
- Type Testing and Disputes: Provides a harmonized, reproducible method for verifying aggregate shape in contractual or regulatory contexts.
- Material Specification Compliance: Ensures materials meet the required geometric standards set out in national and European regulations for building and infrastructure projects.
Complying with the standard supports enhanced product performance, longer service life, and the fulfillment of project specifications.
Related Standards
SIST EN 933-4:2008 is part of a comprehensive suite of aggregate testing standards. Related documents include:
