Rubber and plastics hoses, tubing and assemblies for use with propane and butane and their mixtures in the vapour phase - Part 1: Hoses and tubings

This European Standard specifies the characteristics and performance requirements for tubing and hoses made of either rubber or plastics for use with commercial propane and commercial butane and mixtures thereof, in the vapour phase, for connection of appliances, from:
- pressurized gas container to a regulating device,
- pressurized gas container to an appliance,
- regulating device to an appliance, and
- regulating device to installation pipework,
in environments of a temperature range from -30 °C to +70 °C. Working pressures are from 0 bar to 30 bar.
Three classes are defined in Table 1 according to the maximum working pressures and minimum ambient temperatures.
This European Standard only covers the tubing or hose part of assemblies. The assemblies themselves will be covered by EN 16436-2.
This European Standard does not apply to hoses for:
- welding purposes (see EN ISO 3821, EN 1327);
- propulsion purposes;
- LPG transfer purposes (see EN 1762).

Overview

SIST EN 16436-1:2014+A2:2019/oprA3:2019 establishes the requirements and characteristics for rubber and plastics hoses, tubing, and related assemblies specifically designed for use with propane, butane, and their mixtures in the vapour phase. Applicable in environments with temperatures from -30 °C to +70 °C and working pressures up to 30 bar, this European standard defines product specifications to ensure safety, performance, and reliability in connecting various LPG system components.

This standard addresses only hoses and tubing, not the complete assemblies. Assemblies, including connections and fittings, fall under EN 16436-2. The safety and suitability of these hoses for LPG applications depend on compliance with these requirements.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Purpose: Defines tubing and hoses made of rubber or plastics used with commercial propane and butane in the vapour phase.
  • Connection Points: Covers connections from:
    • Pressurized gas container to a regulator
    • Pressurized gas container directly to an appliance
    • Regulator to an appliance
    • Regulator to installation pipework
  • Temperature and Pressure Ranges: Hoses and tubing must perform reliably from -30°C to +70°C, with working pressures from 0 to 30 bar.
  • Classification:
    • Three classes defined by maximum working pressure and minimum temperature, as detailed in the standard.
  • Product Characteristics: Specifies requirements for inside diameters, wall thickness, concentricity, and tolerances.
  • Marking Requirements: Clear product marking for identification, expiry, and manufacturing dates for enhanced safety and traceability.
  • Exclusions: The standard does not apply to hoses used for welding, propulsion, or LPG transfer, which are covered by other standards (e.g., EN ISO 3821, EN 1762).

Applications

The requirements of SIST EN 16436-1:2014+A2:2019/oprA3:2019 are vital to a range of practical LPG installations where hoses and tubing are exposed to varying conditions and operational demands. Typical use cases include:

  • Household LPG Appliances: Safe gas supply connections for cookers, heaters, and barbecue grills.
  • Leisure and Camping Equipment: Flexible and safe connections for portable stoves, caravan appliances, and camping equipment.
  • Commercial and Industrial Installations: Fueling restaurant equipment and portable industrial devices with propane or butane.
  • Outdoor Installations: Ensures LPG hoses can withstand outdoor temperature extremes and exposure.

By complying with this standard, manufacturers and installers can help prevent gas leaks and ensure robust performance across different LPG application environments.

Related Standards

For a holistic approach to LPG system safety and compliance, consider the following related European and international standards:

  • EN 16436-2: Focuses on the requirements for hose assemblies with fitted end connections for use with propane and butane.
  • EN ISO 3821: Specifies requirements for rubber hoses for welding, cutting, and allied processes.
  • EN 1762: Covers hoses for LPG transfer purposes.
  • EN 1327: Specifies hoses for certain welding applications.

Conclusion:
SIST EN 16436-1:2014+A2:2019/oprA3:2019 is fundamental for ensuring that rubber and plastics hoses and tubing used with commercial propane and butane meet strict European quality and safety standards. Its requirements foster the safe installation and use of LPG systems in residential, commercial, and leisure environments, offering clear benefit to manufacturers, installers, and end-users in the LPG equipment supply chain.

SIST EN 16436-1:2014+A2:2019/oprA3:2019 is a draft published by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST). Its full title is "Rubber and plastics hoses, tubing and assemblies for use with propane and butane and their mixtures in the vapour phase - Part 1: Hoses and tubings". This standard covers: This European Standard specifies the characteristics and performance requirements for tubing and hoses made of either rubber or plastics for use with commercial propane and commercial butane and mixtures thereof, in the vapour phase, for connection of appliances, from: - pressurized gas container to a regulating device, - pressurized gas container to an appliance, - regulating device to an appliance, and - regulating device to installation pipework, in environments of a temperature range from -30 °C to +70 °C. Working pressures are from 0 bar to 30 bar. Three classes are defined in Table 1 according to the maximum working pressures and minimum ambient temperatures. This European Standard only covers the tubing or hose part of assemblies. The assemblies themselves will be covered by EN 16436-2. This European Standard does not apply to hoses for: - welding purposes (see EN ISO 3821, EN 1327); - propulsion purposes; - LPG transfer purposes (see EN 1762).
