Aerospace series - Cables, electrical, aircraft use - Test methods - Part 701 - Strippability and adherence of insulation to the conductor

This European Standard specifies methods of measuring the strippability and adherence of the insulation to a conductor of a finished cable.
When a particular method is not specified in the detail product specification, method A shall be used.
Method B is recommended for wires insulated with materials showing a Low adhesion to the conductor due to the poor repeatability of the test Method A with this type of wires.
It shall be used together with EN 3475-100.

Aeronavtika - Električni kabli za uporabo v letalih - Preskusne metode - 701. del: Odstranljivost in oprijemljivost izolacije vodnika

Ta evropski standard določa metode za merjenje odstranljivosti in oprijemljivosti izolacije vodnika dokončanega kabla.
in sicer zaradi slabe ponovljivosti preskusa A s tem tipom žice.
Uporabljati ga je treba skupaj s standardom EN 3475-100.

Overview

SIST EN 3475-701:2018 is a European Standard in the Aerospace series, developed by the Slovenski inštitut za standardizacijo (SIST), that specifies test methods for assessing the strippability and adherence of insulation to conductors in finished electrical cables intended for aircraft use. Ensuring proper insulation adherence and controlled strippability is essential in aviation environments, where reliable electrical performance and safety are paramount. This standard defines two primary methods for measuring these properties, ensuring cable quality and suitability for rigorous aerospace applications.

Key Topics

  • Strippability Measurement
Defines standardized procedures for assessing how easily insulation can be stripped from the cable conductor without damaging the wire or insulation.

    • Measurements are made on cable specimens directly from reels or coils.
    • Compliance with referenced tooling standards (e.g., EN 2812) is required.
  • Adherence Testing
Establishes test approaches to confirm the insulation's bonding strength to the conductor, which is critical for electrical and mechanical reliability.

    • Method A: Default method unless otherwise specified.
    • Method B: Recommended for wires with low insulation adhesion, where Method A results may be inconsistent.
  • Specimen Preparation
Procedures for sample preparation ensure consistent and reproducible testing.

    • Specifies cable segment lengths and stripping procedures.
  • Performance Requirements

    • Defined maximum time for stripping insulation (e.g., 40 seconds for skilled operators).
    • Minimum adhesion force requirements as per the relevant product standard.
  • Tooling and Equipment

    • Use of standardized stripping tools and testing setups.

Applications

  • Aerospace Cable Manufacturing
Essential standard for manufacturers of electrical cables for aircraft, used during product development and quality control to verify insulation characteristics.

  • Cable Testing Laboratories
Utilized in third-party certification and aerospace cable testing labs to ensure compliance with industry requirements.

  • Aviation Maintenance and Repair
Supports maintenance operations by enabling benchmarking and consistent evaluation of replacement cables’ insulation adherence and strippability.

  • Procurement and Specification
Referenced in aerospace cable purchase specifications and procurement contracts to ensure supplied products meet international reliability standards.

  • Certification and Compliance
Applies throughout manufacturing processes for regulatory compliance and is indispensable for documentation in certification dossiers.

Related Standards

  • EN 3475-100:
The general part of the EN 3475 series, outlining overarching test methods and requirements for aerospace electrical cables. SIST EN 3475-701 is intended to be used in conjunction with EN 3475-100.

  • EN 2812:
Specifies methods and tools for stripping electric cables, referenced for carrying out the procedures in this standard.

  • Other EN 3475 Parts:
Additional standards in the EN 3475 series address different attributes and test methods for aerospace electrical cables, ensuring a comprehensive framework for cable qualification.

By following SIST EN 3475-701:2018, organizations and laboratories can assure that cables installed in aircraft meet strict criteria for both ease of strippability and sufficient insulation adherence, addressing critical aspects of aerospace electrical safety and performance.
