Tests for chemical properties of aggregates - Part 5: Determination of acid soluble chloride salts

This European Standard specifies the procedure for the determination of acid soluble chloride salts which may be present in aggregates. This test is suitable for aggregates where the chloride content does not derive directly from contact with, or immersion in, saline water. Examples of such aggregates are: recycled aggregates containing hydrated cement, where chloride may be bound as calcium chloroaluminates; and some aggregates from desert areas where chloride is occluded within the aggregate particles.

Overview

SIST EN 1744-5:2007 is a European standard that defines a laboratory method for determining acid soluble chloride salts in aggregates. Chloride salts in aggregates can impact the durability and performance of construction materials, particularly concrete. This standard is especially relevant for aggregates whose chloride content is not derived from direct contact with saline water, such as recycled aggregates containing hydrated cement or aggregates from desert regions. Proper measurement of acid soluble chloride is essential for ensuring the quality and longevity of building materials.

Key Topics

  • Chloride Determination Method: The standard outlines a chemical testing procedure (based on the Volhard titration method) to quantify chloride ions that are soluble in acid from aggregate samples.
  • Applicability: This test is suitable for aggregates with potential bound or occluded chlorides, rather than those contaminated by seawater or similar saline sources.
  • Sampling and Preparation: Guidance is provided for sampling, specimen preparation, and laboratory handling to achieve accurate and repeatable results.
  • Safety and Quality: Instructions on reagent handling, apparatus requirements, and quality assurance help maintain laboratory safety and data integrity.

Applications

The test method described in SIST EN 1744-5:2007 is widely used in the construction and materials testing industries to:

  • Assure Material Compliance: Manufacturers, suppliers, and laboratories use this standard to ensure aggregates meet strict regulatory and performance criteria regarding chloride content.
  • Evaluate Recycled Aggregates: It is particularly important for assessing recycled concrete aggregates, where residual cementitious material may influence chloride levels and subsequent risks of steel reinforcement corrosion.
  • Monitor Natural Aggregates: The standard can be applied to natural aggregates, especially from arid or desert sources, where chlorides may be occluded within particles.
  • Protect Reinforced Concrete: High levels of chloride can lead to corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete structures. Accurate testing helps mitigate risks and inform appropriate use or treatment of aggregate materials.
  • Support Construction Specifications: Project engineers and quality managers reference these results to demonstrate compliance with building codes and European regulations.

Related Standards

For comprehensive aggregate and construction material quality assurance, SIST EN 1744-5:2007 should be used alongside several other key standards:

  • EN 1744-1: Chemical analysis of aggregates
  • EN 932-1: Methods for sampling aggregates
  • EN 932-5: Common equipment and calibration for aggregate testing
  • EN 196-21: Determination of the chloride content in cement
  • EN 1097: Mechanical and physical properties of aggregates
  • EN 1367: Thermal and weathering tests for aggregates

Together, these standards support a rigorous and systematic approach to testing mineral aggregates for use in concrete, asphalt, and other construction applications, enhancing both safety and longevity in built environments.
