Fertilizers and liming materials - Classification
This European Standard establishes a classification system for fertilizers and liming materials. The classification scheme includes an explanation of the meaning of each heading and clearly assigns each fertilizer or liming material to an appropriate group whilst recognizing that a few fertilizers or liming materials may be classified differently in some countries. The limits for nutrients contents which determine each class may be subject to national legislation.

Overview
SIST EN 13535:2002 establishes a standardized classification system for fertilizers and liming materials throughout Europe, ensuring clear identification and assignment of each product according to harmonized categories. Developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST) and aligned with EN 13535:2001, this standard supports regulatory compliance, facilitates international trade, and enhances the transparency of fertilizer and soil amendment products. The classification drawn by the standard is mindful of national legislative variations and supports both producers and regulators in effective product identification and communication.
Key Topics
- Comprehensive Classification Scheme: The standard presents a detailed hierarchy for grouping fertilizers and liming materials based on their composition and intended use.
- Inorganic fertilizers (e.g., nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium-based)
- Inorganic liming materials (e.g., calcium/magnesium oxides, carbonates)
- Organic fertilizers (animal or plant origin, synthetic organics)
- Mixed origin fertilizers (organo-mineral fertilizers, organic-based fertilizers)
- Use of Descriptive Terms: For clarity and international relevance, nutrient contents are described using words-not chemical symbols-avoiding confusion related to elemental or oxide forms.
- Alignment with National Legislation: Recognizes that nutrient content limits and the precise categorization of certain fertilizers may differ according to each country's regulatory requirements.
- Integration with Related Vocabulary: Directly references EN 12944 for standardized terminology, ensuring consistent interpretation among manufacturers, users, and authorities.
Applications
SIST EN 13535:2002 is crucial for:
- Manufacturers and Importers: Assists in the accurate labeling, documentation, and placement of fertilizers and liming materials on the European market, reducing regulatory barriers and easing cross-border commerce.
- Regulatory Bodies and Inspectors: Provides a harmonized framework for inspection, enforcement, and reporting, facilitating compliance with both EU and national legislation.
- Agricultural Professionals and Distributors: Supports the precise selection and application of soil amendments, promoting soil health, optimized crop nutrition, and sustainable farming practices.
- Researchers and Analysts: Offers a common language and structure for studying fertilizer impacts, driving advancements in sustainable agriculture.
Typical practical uses include:
- Product development and reformulation by manufacturers to meet classification requirements
- Preparation of data sheets and safety documentation
- Ensuring correct usage instructions and claims for agricultural end-users
- Facilitating regulatory approvals for new or imported products
Related Standards
- EN 12944 - Fertilizers and Liming Materials - Vocabulary: Provides all key definitions and terms used in the classification, ensuring consistency in communication.
- Other relevant EN and ISO fertilizer standards: For grading, composition, labeling, and testing of fertilizers and liming products.
Practical Value
With its clear definitions and logical structure, SIST EN 13535:2002 increases confidence in the fertilizer and liming material supply chain. It ensures products are communicated and regulated according to a recognized European standard, supporting transparency, safety, and effectiveness in agricultural production and land management.
Key benefits include:
- Streamlining product registration and compliance across Europe
- Reducing misunderstandings in international trade
- Enabling efficient and accurate product comparison and selection
- Supporting sustainable agriculture through proper product identification
