Overview
SIST EN ISO 10462:2014/A1:2019 is the Slovenian implementation of Amendment 1 to ISO 10462:2013, an international standard that outlines requirements for the periodic inspection and maintenance of gas cylinders specifically designed for acetylene. The amendment was approved by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and is integrated into national standards across Europe, ensuring uniform safety protocols for the transport and ongoing use of acetylene cylinders.
This standard applies to acetylene cylinders-with or without solvent-having a maximum nominal water capacity of 150 liters. The main goal is to reinforce safe practices for handling, inspecting, and maintaining acetylene cylinders, contributing to the overall safety of workers and the public when dealing with dangerous goods.
Key Topics
- Periodic Inspection: Specifies intervals and procedures for the examination of acetylene cylinders to detect defects or deterioration that may compromise safety during transport or use.
- Maintenance Requirements: Sets out necessary maintenance procedures and criteria for determining the continued fitness of an acetylene cylinder for service.
- Disposal and Marking of Rejected Cylinders: Amendment 1 clarifies that rejected cylinders must be clearly marked (e.g., with white stencil painting) before transportation to facilities where they are rendered unserviceable, fulfilling legal, waste, and environmental management requirements where applicable.
- Scope Limitations: Covers only acetylene gas cylinders up to 150 L water capacity, with or without solvents.
- Regulatory Alignment: Ensures compliance with standards for the transport of dangerous goods, harmonizing requirements across European and international boundaries.
Applications
Applying SIST EN ISO 10462:2014/A1:2019 in practice helps organizations and handlers of acetylene cylinders by:
- Enhancing Safety: Periodic inspection and proper marking of unserviceable cylinders reduce risks of accidents, leaks, and hazardous incidents during transport and storage.
- Facilitating Regulatory Compliance: Meeting international and national laws for the periodic inspection and maintenance of pressurized gas cylinders, particularly crucial in industries like welding, metal cutting, chemical manufacturing, and gas distribution.
- Supporting Life Cycle Management: Systematically inspecting and maintaining acetylene cylinders extends their operational life and ensures their safe removal from service at end-of-life.
- Enabling Cross-Border Operations: Harmonized standards simplify logistics for multinational companies dealing with the transport and use of acetylene gas cylinders throughout Europe and other ISO-adopting regions.
Related Standards
Organizations using or maintaining acetylene cylinders should also be aware of the following related standards:
- ISO 10462:2013: The base standard for the periodic inspection and maintenance of acetylene cylinders.
- EN ISO 9809: Specifies requirements for design, construction, and testing of seamless steel gas cylinders.
- ISO 11621: Details procedures for the periodic inspection and testing of gas cylinders.
- ADR (European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road): Provides regulatory framework for the transport of dangerous goods, including gases.
- ISO 11114 series: Covers compatibility of cylinder and valve materials with gases and cylinder filling procedures.
Aligning with these standards ensures that acetylene cylinder maintenance and inspection processes remain current and compliant, supporting safety and operational excellence across industries.
