Overview

SIST EN 13126-12:2026 is an international standard developed by the Slovenski inštitut za standardizacijo (SIST) for side hung projecting reversible hardware used in windows and door-height windows. This part of the EN 13126 series details the essential requirements and test methods to ensure the durability, strength, security, and function of side hung projecting reversible hardware systems, regardless of whether they are equipped with integral restrictors. It provides an authoritative basis for manufacturers, specifiers, and certifying bodies to evaluate product quality and compliance for building hardware in residential, commercial, and industrial settings.

Key Topics

  • Scope

    • Specifies minimum requirements and standardized test methods for side hung projecting reversible hardware.
    • Covers hardware fitted to windows and door-height windows, with or without integral restrictors.
    • Addresses aspects such as dangerous substances, ease of operation, and durability.
    • Integral restrictors are to be tested per EN 13126-5 when present.
  • Classification System

    • Uses a four-box system:
      • Durability (number of opening/closing cycles)
      • Mass (maximum tested sash weight)
      • Corrosion Resistance (in line with EN 1670 requirements)
      • Test Sizes (window dimensions used for testing)
  • Key Testing Requirements

    • Ease of Movement: Ensures the force required to operate the sash does not exceed set limits.
    • Durability: Validates continued functioning after repeated operation (grades: H1 - 5,000 cycles, H2 - 10,000 cycles, H3 - 20,000 cycles).
    • Obstructed Track: Assesses resistance and continued function if hardware operation is blocked.
    • Static Load: Verifies mechanical strength and that gaps do not increase by more than 3 mm.
    • Additional Load: Examines safety aspects against accidental overloads.
    • Corrosion Resistance: Evaluates visible surfaces per EN 1670, minimum grade 2.
  • Marking

    • Products and documentation must display manufacturer identity, standard number, classification, and production date or code.

Applications

SIST EN 13126-12:2026 is critical for:

  • Manufacturers and Suppliers: Provides a consistent framework for designing, producing, and marketing compliant window and door hardware. Ensures product suitability for European and other international markets.
  • Builders and Architects: Offers assurance of reliable and safe operation in building construction projects, including residential, commercial, and industrial applications.
  • Testing Laboratories and Certification Bodies: Serves as the fundamental document for type testing, factory production control, and certification of side hung projecting reversible window hardware.
  • Facility Managers and End Users: Sets expectations for hardware performance, durability, and safety, contributing to long-term operational reliability and reduced maintenance costs.

Related Standards

Several related standards complement and reference SIST EN 13126-12:2026 for comprehensive quality assurance and compatibility in building hardware:

  • EN 1670: Building hardware - Corrosion resistance - Requirements and test methods.
  • EN 13126-5: Devices that restrict window and door opening (testing of restrictors).
  • EN 13126-1: General requirements for all types of window and door hardware.
  • Other EN 13126 Parts: Covering various hardware types such as window handles (Part 2, Part 3), espagnolettes (Part 4), variable geometry hinges (Part 6), and more.

For fully compliant window and door installations, stakeholders should be aware of, and reference, the relevant standards in the EN 13126 series and associated documents.
