Overview

oSIST prEN 17752:2026: Inorganic fertilizers - Determination of specific inhibiting compounds is a draft European Standard developed by CEN/TC 260 (Fertilizers and Liming Materials). This standard specifies reference methods for determining the content of nitrification inhibiting compounds and urease inhibiting compounds in inorganic fertilizers. The document aims to harmonize analytical procedures across the European Union and ensure compliance with Regulation (EU) 2019/1009, which outlines requirements for EU fertilizing products under product function category PFC 1(C). oSIST prEN 17752:2026 is not applicable to fertilizer blends, focusing solely on single-component inorganic fertilizers.

Key Topics

  • Nitrification Inhibiting Compounds:
    • The standard provides references to established methods for quantifying compounds that slow down the conversion of ammonium to nitrate in soils, including dicyandiamide, 3-methylpyrazole (MP), 1H-1,2,4-triazole, 3,4-dimethyl-1H-pyrazole phosphate (DMPP), and 2-(3,4-dimethyl-pyrazol-1-yl)-succinic acid (DMPSA).
  • Urease Inhibiting Compounds:
    • It details references for the determination of urease inhibitors such as N-(n-butyl)thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT), N-(2-nitrophenyl)phosphoric triamide (2-NPT), and N-(n-propyl)thiophosphoric triamide (NPPT).
  • Sampling and Sample Preparation:
    • The document refers to EN 1482 series for standardized sampling and sample preparation protocols to ensure accuracy and repeatability.
  • Conformity and Regulation:
    • Compliance with this standard helps manufacturers and laboratories meet the essential safety and quality requirements outlined in Regulation (EU) 2019/1009.

Applications

This standard is highly relevant for:

  • Fertilizer Manufacturers: Ensuring their inorganic fertilizers meet EU regulatory requirements for specific inhibitor content, thus enabling lawful market access within the EU and EFTA member states.
  • Analytical Laboratories: Providing validated reference methods for the reliable determination of inhibitor levels in inorganic fertilizers. Following standardized procedures supports comparability of results across different organizations.
  • Regulatory Bodies and Inspectors: Assisting in product compliance checks and market surveillance by referencing recognized test methods for the quantification of nitrification and urease inhibitors.
  • Agricultural Industry Stakeholders: Supporting sustainable fertilizer application through the use of fertilizers with properly characterized inhibitor content, contributing to improved nitrogen use efficiency and reduced environmental impact.

Related Standards

oSIST prEN 17752:2026 references and is complemented by the following key standards within the fertilizer analysis domain:

  • Sampling and Preparation
    • EN 1482-1: General sampling provisions
    • EN 1482-2: General sample preparation provisions
