Overview
SIST EN 61212-3-3:2007 specifies the requirements for industrial rigid round laminated moulded rods used for electrical purposes, manufactured using thermosetting resins and various types of reinforcements. This European standard ensures that materials conforming to its requirements meet recognized performance levels, making them suitable for a broad range of electrical and mechanical applications. Although it establishes essential performance benchmarks, users are encouraged to select materials based on specific application needs, considering additional criteria beyond those outlined in the standard.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability:
- Covers industrial rigid round laminated rods, produced using various thermosetting resins (like epoxy, phenolic, and silicone) and reinforcements (such as woven glass cloth and cotton cloth).
- Focuses on round laminated moulded rods intended for use as electrical insulating materials in electrical and electronic equipment.
Material Designations and Classification:
- Rods are classified by a combination of resin type, reinforcement type, and manufacturing method.
- Designations use standardized abbreviations (e.g., EP for epoxy, GC for glass cloth) and serial numbers to denote specific types.
- Each type has typical applications and distinguishing characteristics, such as mechanical strength, electrical insulation properties, resistance to tracking, and flame resistance.
Dimensional and Mechanical Requirements:
- Sets precise tolerances for rod diameter and straightness, addressing both "as moulded" and "ground or turned" finishes.
- Mechanical properties such as flexural strength, compressive strength, and thermal endurance are specified to support reliability in demanding conditions.
Electrical Properties and Performance Benchmarks:
- Specifies minimums for breakdown voltage, insulation resistance (including after water immersion), and water absorption characteristics.
- Includes guidance on flammability and other safety considerations, focusing on materials' suitability for specific electrical environments.
Applications
Industrial rigid round laminated moulded rods compliant with SIST EN 61212-3-3:2007 are used extensively as electrical insulating materials in:
- Power Equipment: For use within switchgear, busbars, transformers, and electrical enclosures.
- Electrical Machines: Insulation supports, spacers, rotor and stator components.
- Distribution Boards and Control Cabinets: As supports or mounting hardware where mechanical and electrical insulation are required.
- Other Electronic Devices: Suitable for environments requiring moisture resistance, flame retardance, or high mechanical strength.
- Mechanical Applications: In assemblies where combined mechanical load-bearing and electrical insulation are critical, such as in fixtures, guides, or structural supports.
Selection should consider:
- The operating temperature range
- Electrical stresses present
- Environmental factors such as humidity, chemicals, and flammability expectations
Related Standards
For comprehensive understanding and correct application of SIST EN 61212-3-3:2007, the following related standards are essential:
- IEC 61212-1: Insulating materials – General requirements and definitions for industrial rigid round laminated tubes and rods based on thermosetting resins for electrical purposes.
- IEC 61212-2: Insulating materials – Methods of test for industrial rigid round laminated tubes and rods.

FOREWORD 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations. 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any misinterpretation by any end user. 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter. 5) IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any equipment declared to be in conformity with an IEC Publication. 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication. 7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employee
