Packaging - Rigid plastic containers - PET finish 30/25 High (18,5)

This European Standard specifies the dimensions and requirements of the 30 mm tall screw finish with three (3) thread starts for flat waters and non-carbonated beverages.
This finish can be used for aseptic filling and filling with introduction of nitrogen. The dimension (18,5) is the height in millimetres from the top of finish to the bottom of the support ledge.
This finish is designed to take a tamper evident plastic closure only. During first opening, the tamper evident band will separate from the closure shell and stay on a one-way bottle neck or like bottles in the returnable market, the tamper evident band will tear but will remain connected to the closure shell.

Overview

SIST EN 16064:2012 is a European standard that defines the dimensions and functional requirements for the 30 mm PET screw finish, specifically the 30/25 High (18,5) type, used on rigid plastic containers. This standardized finish is designed primarily for flat waters and non-carbonated beverages. It ensures that packaging manufacturers and fillers use consistent, high-quality PET bottle neck finishes compatible with tamper-evident plastic closures. The specification supports essential packaging goals such as product safety, tamper detection, and efficient bottling-including aseptic and nitrogen-enhanced filling processes.

Key Topics

  • 30/25 High (18,5) PET Finish: Specifies a 30 mm tall screw finish with three thread starts spaced 120° apart and a height of 18,5 mm from the top of the finish to the support ledge.
  • Compatibility and Safety: Designed exclusively for tamper evident plastic closures. The tamper-evident band is engineered to either separate and remain on a one-way bottle neck or tear, depending on the bottle’s recyclability and reuse.
  • Functional Requirements:
    • Supports top, side, and inside sealing.
    • Surface finish must be smooth to prevent leaks.
    • Strict limits on manufacturing imperfections and flash (excess plastic from molding).
    • Precise dimensional tolerances for effective closure compatibility.
  • Manufacturing Quality: Stipulates maximum allowable deviations in thread alignment, sealing surface uniformity, and finish smoothness, helping prevent leaks and closure failure.

Applications

This standard is relevant in several key sectors:

  • Beverage Packaging: Widely used for water, juice, and non-carbonated drinks, ensuring reliable filling and transport in PET bottles.
  • Aseptic and Nitrogen Filling: Suitable for modern packaging lines that require clean, sterile bottling or the use of nitrogen to enhance product shelf life and maintain bottle integrity.
  • Tamper Evident Packaging: Critical for consumer safety-ensuring the integrity of the product until first opening. This finish works with closures that visually indicate tampering, supporting product trust.
  • Returnable and One-way Bottles: Adaptable for both single-use and reusable bottle systems in beverage markets, thanks to the flexible design of the tamper-evident band.

Manufacturers and bottlers adhering to SIST EN 16064:2012 benefit from greater compatibility across supply chains, improved sealing reliability, and easier compliance with EU regulatory and safety requirements. This standard also aids suppliers and closure manufacturers in producing compatible components for the wider European packaging market.

Related Standards

For a comprehensive approach to PET container neck finishes and closures, consider the following related standards:

  • EN 16064:2011: The European reference standard, on which SIST EN 16064:2012 is based.
  • CE.T.I.E. GME 30.21: Technical data sheet detailing similar PET finish specifications for bottling and packaging.
  • ISO 13399 series: General guidance on packaging and bottle neck dimensions (complementary for broader applications).
  • Other SIST and EN Packaging Standards: Covering additional container types, sealing systems, and closure specifications for rigid plastic packaging in the beverage industry.

Adopting SIST EN 16064:2012 ensures PET bottle packaging delivers secure, leak-proof, and tamper-evident performance, supporting both industry efficiency and consumer confidence.
