Overview

SIST EN 16592:2023 defines the design and dimensional specifications for the 29 mm PET screw finish, identified as 29/25 (12,6), used on rigid plastic containers. This standard is crucial for the packaging sector, specifically for bottles intended for flat waters and non-carbonated beverages. The main focus of this standard is to ensure consistent, reliable sealing, compatibility with tamper-evident closures, and suitability for various filling processes such as aseptic and nitrogen-pressurized filling (with pressures up to 1 bar).

Standardization through SIST EN 16592:2023 supports high-quality production, boosts interoperability among packaging manufacturers, and helps streamline the supply chain for plastic containers used in beverage and water bottling.

Key Topics

  • Design of PET Finish 29/25 (12,6):
    • Specifies a screw finish with three thread starts, each 120° apart, facilitating efficient and uniform closure application.
    • The “12,6” dimension refers to the 12.6 mm height measured from the top of the finish to the base of the support ledge.
  • Closure Features:
    • Designed to be sealed exclusively with tamper-evident plastic closures, including those with attached caps, enhancing product integrity and consumer safety.
  • Performance Requirements:
    • The finish supports both aseptic filling and filling under low nitrogen pressure (internal overpressure not exceeding 1 bar).
    • Requires a defect-free, smooth finish to avoid any risks of leakage.
    • Mandates strict tolerances on flash, thread alignment, and sealing surfaces to ensure airtight closure and trouble-free capping.
  • Dimensional Accuracy:
    • Tolerances are clearly defined to maintain bottle performance and compatibility across the supply chain.
    • Precise measurements for thread pitch, diameters, and cylindrical zones enable uniform manufacturing and fitment.

Applications

  • Beverage Bottling:
    • Primarily used for packaging flat (still) waters and non-carbonated drinks in PET bottles where secure, tamper-evident sealing is required.
  • Aseptic and Nitrogen Filling:
    • The finish supports both aseptic filling operations and nitrogen-pressurized environments (up to 1 bar), making it suitable for preserving product quality by preventing contamination and oxidation.
  • Tamper-Evident Packaging:
    • Supports implementation of tamper-evident caps, helping manufacturers meet international safety standards and consumer demands for security features in packaging.
