Overview
SIST EN 1015-19:1999 is a European Standard that outlines the method for assessing the water vapour permeability of hardened rendering and plastering mortars. Developed by the Slovenski inštitut za standardizacijo (SIST), this standard provides a reliable procedure for determining how effectively mortars prevent or permit the passage of water vapour. This information plays a critical role in the design, selection, and application of mortars used in masonry construction, particularly when considering moisture management, durability, and the overall indoor climate of buildings.
Key Topics
- Water Vapour Permeability: The core focus is the steady-state water vapour permeability measurement of mortar samples, crucial for understanding their moisture regulation capabilities.
- Applicable Mortar Types: Targets rendering and plastering mortars as specified in prEN 998-1, which are widely used for protective and decorative coatings on masonry walls.
- Sample Requirements: The method is applicable to mortars that can be formed into disc-shaped specimens with uniform thicknesses between 10 mm and 30 mm.
- Hygroscopic Range: Tests are conducted at both the upper and lower parts of the hygroscopic range, reflecting real-world variations in atmospheric humidity.
Applications
Applying the test method described in SIST EN 1015-19:1999 delivers practical benefits across the construction and building materials industries:
- Product Development and Quality Control: Manufacturers can systematically test new mortar formulations for compliance and performance, ensuring that end products meet specified water vapour permeability requirements.
- Building Renovation and Restoration: Engineers and architects can select suitable plastering and rendering mortars that facilitate appropriate moisture transport, helping to preserve wall integrity in both new constructions and historically sensitive renovations.
- Material Specification: The standard's results aid in specifying mortars in design documents, supporting design professionals in achieving optimal indoor air quality and moisture management within buildings.
- Comparative Analysis: Offers a standardized basis for comparing water vapour permeability of various commercial mortar products, enhancing decision-making and project planning.
Related Standards
For comprehensive moisture management in masonry and ensuring compatibility in construction materials, consider these related standards:
- EN 1015-18: Methods of test for mortar for masonry - Determination of water absorption coefficient by capillarity.
- prEN 998-1: Specification for mortar for masonry - Rendering and plastering mortars.
- EN 1015-11: Methods of test for mortar for masonry - Determination of flexural and compressive strength of hardened mortar.
- EN 998-2: Specification for masonry mortars.
These standards, alongside SIST EN 1015-19:1999, form a robust framework for testing, selecting, and specifying mortars used in modern and traditional masonry.
SIST EN 1015-19:1999 is indispensable for professionals involved in construction, architecture, and materials testing, ensuring long-term durability and moisture control in masonry structures through reliable measurement of water vapour permeability.
