(Amendment)Railway Applications - Axlebox lubricating greases - Part 1: Method to test the ability to lubricate
Railway Applications - Axlebox lubricating greases - Part 1: Method to test the ability to lubricate
This European Standard specifies a testing method and sets the acceptance criteria for the determining of the lubrication ability of lubricating greases intended for the lubrication of axlebox bearings. The lubricating ability, primarily related to the capability of lubricating greases to protect against wear, is determined in a roller bearing lubricant test rig. Wear of the rolling bearing rollers, the frictional behaviour and temperature during the test are used to discriminate between lubricating greases.
NOTE 1 The testing method is referred to in EN 12081.
The method described is carried out in order to test axlebox greases for ordinary-speed vehicles, with speeds up to 200 km/h, and for greases intended for high-speed vehicles, with speeds up to 300 km/h. The method is a discriminating process, and those greases that pass will be subject to more extensive performance tests.
NOTE 2 In EN 12082 a more extensive rig performance test is described in detail. This rig performance test will check the satisfactory function of the assembly of box housing, bearing, sealing and grease during a simulated journey.
For purpose of quality assurance and quality control, this test method is also used for batch testing of greases intended for use in axleboxes.
For light rail and tramway applications other standards or documents agreed between the customer and the supplier may be applied.

Overview
SIST EN 14865-1:2010/kFprA1:2010 sets the standardized method for testing the lubricating ability of axlebox lubricating greases used in railway applications. Originating from Slovenian and European standardization (SIST and CEN), this document establishes consistent acceptance criteria for axlebox bearing greases, focusing on performance parameters such as wear protection, friction, and thermal behavior in roller bearing test rigs.
This standard is relevant for manufacturers, suppliers, and operators in the railway industry, ensuring axlebox greases meet quality, safety, and interoperability requirements. The method supports both ordinary-speed (up to 200 km/h) and high-speed (up to 300 km/h) rail applications, while also serving as a quality control measure for grease batch testing.
Key Topics
- Test Method for Lubricity: Specifies the procedure for evaluating the lubrication capability of axlebox greases in a controlled roller bearing test rig environment.
- Acceptance Criteria: Defines the wear, friction, and temperature parameters used to determine grease suitability for railway axlebox applications.
- Scope of Testing: Applicable to both ordinary-speed and high-speed rail vehicles; can be adapted for batch testing in quality assurance processes.
- Interoperability Compliance: Directly supports essential requirements outlined in EU Directive 2008/57/EC on railway system interoperability.
- Reference to Further Testing: Stresses that greases passing this standard’s method are subject to subsequent, more extensive rig performance testing as described in EN 12082.
- Flexibility for Light Rail and Tramways: Allows for alternative standards or agreements between supplier and customer for non-mainline applications.
Applications
SIST EN 14865-1:2010/kFprA1:2010 is critical across various areas of the railway sector:
- Quality Assurance for Grease Manufacturers: Ensures that each production batch of axlebox lubricating grease meets minimum performance standards.
- Railway Operators and Maintenance: Provides a reliable framework for selecting axlebox greases that maximize rolling bearing lifespan and minimize maintenance.
- Certification and Compliance: Supports evidence-based conformity for products placed within the European market, aligning with EU Directive 2008/57/EC.
- System Integration: Facilitates the safe and reliable operation of rolling stock, reducing the risks of component failure linked to insufficient lubrication.
- Procurement and Specification: Assists purchasers in stipulating axlebox grease performance, supporting transparency across the supply chain.
By adhering to this standard, stakeholders can reduce operational costs, improve safety, and enhance the reliability of railway services.
Related Standards
- EN 12081: References the testing method specified in EN 14865-1.
- EN 12082: Outlines more extensive rig performance tests for axlebox assemblies, including the combined function of housing, bearing, seal, and grease.
- EU Directive 2008/57/EC: Defines essential requirements for interoperability within the European rail system, with axlebox grease forming part of the rolling stock assessment.
- ICS 45.040: Standards for railway materials and components.
- ICS 75.100: Standards relating to lubricants, industrial oils, and related products.
These references work collectively to support quality, safety, and interoperability in railway applications, ensuring axlebox lubricating greases deliver optimal performance in demanding operational environments.
