Overview

SIST EN 60335-2-41:2003 is a European standard that specifies the safety requirements for electric pumps used in household and similar applications. Developed by the Slovenski inštitut za standardizacijo (SIST), this standard aligns with EN 60335-2-41:2003 and IEC 60335-2-41:2002. It is designed to ensure a high level of protection for users by addressing hazards associated with electric pumps for liquids up to 90°C and with rated voltages not exceeding 250 V for single-phase appliances, or 480 V for other types.

Electric pumps covered by this standard include, for example:

  • Aquarium pumps
  • Pumps for garden ponds
  • Sludge pumps
  • Submersible pumps
  • Table fountain pumps
  • Vertical wet pit pumps

It is important to note that pumps incorporated as parts of other appliances are excluded unless specifically referenced.

Key Topics

The standard emphasizes several critical safety and compliance topics related to electric pumps:

  • Temperature limits: Applies to pumps handling liquids not exceeding 90°C
  • Voltage ratings: Covers appliances with a rated voltage of up to 250 V (single-phase) or 480 V (other appliances)
  • Specific product scope: Focuses on standalone pumps used in domestic and similar environments
  • Supplementary requirements: Supplements the terms of EN 60335-1, which outlines general safety requirements for household electrical appliances
  • Risk considerations: Addresses primary risks, in line with European safety directives, especially those governed by the Low Voltage Directive

Applications

This standard is essential for manufacturers, suppliers, and regulatory agencies involved with the safety and compliance of household and similar electric pumps. Typical applications include:

  • Domestic aquariums: Ensuring safe operation of pumps for aquarium systems
  • Garden water features: Safety compliance for pumps used in fountains, ponds, and table water displays
  • Sludge and wastewater handling: Guidance for pumps transporting domestic waste or sludge
  • Submersible pumping solutions: Safety for pumps designed for immersion in water, as found in garden, cellar, or flood control applications

Adhering to SIST EN 60335-2-41:2003 ensures that equipment is designed and tested to prevent hazards such as electric shock, overheating, and mechanical failure, thus ensuring user safety and regulatory compliance within the European market.

Related Standards

For comprehensive compliance, the following related standards and directives should also be considered:

  • SIST EN 60335-1: General requirements for the safety of household and similar electrical appliances
  • IEC 60335-2-41: International reference for safety and particular requirements for electric pumps
  • Low Voltage Directive (73/23/EEC): Governs electrical safety in the EU
  • Machinery Directive (98/37/EC): Covers machinery safety, though risks of pumps covered by this standard are primarily electrical
  • EN 60335 Series: Other particular requirements for different household appliance categories

By aligning products with SIST EN 60335-2-41:2003 and these related standards, organizations demonstrate their commitment to user safety, product reliability, and compliance with European regulations for household electric pumps.
