Overview

SIST EN 12545:2000/kprA1:2009 specifies common requirements for the noise test code applicable to footwear, leather, and imitation leather goods manufacturing machines. This document, developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST) as a Type 1 amendment to EN 12545:2000, aligns the noise measurement procedures with updated European regulatory frameworks and references. The amendment supports compliance with both the updated EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and essential health and safety requirements.

The standard provides a structured approach for evaluating noise emissions from a wide range of machines used in the footwear and leather goods manufacturing industry. By adopting these requirements, manufacturers can help ensure machine safety, meet regulatory obligations, and address occupational health concerns regarding workplace noise.

Key Topics

  • Scope of Machines:

    • Cutting and punching machines
    • Roughing, scouring, polishing, and trimming machines
    • Footwear moulding machines
    • Lasting machines (including tack and staple side lasting)
    • Nailing machines (including heel attaching, heel nailing, and gang nailing)
    • Modular shoe repair equipment
    • Shoe and leather presses
    • Splitting, skiving, cutting, cementing, and cement drying machines
  • Noise Measurement Requirements:

    • Standardizes noise emission assessment techniques according to referenced acoustics standards (such as EN ISO 3747).
    • Ensures compatibility of noise data for consistent health and safety documentation in the footwear and leather goods sectors.
  • Harmonization with EU Directives:

    • Aligns with both the earlier Machinery Directive 98/37/EC and its revision (2006/42/EC).
    • Provides procedures and normative references supporting essential requirements for machinery safety across EU markets.

Applications

This standard is critical for:

  • Manufacturers of Footwear and Leather Goods Machinery:

    • Ensuring machines are designed and tested for noise emissions in accordance with EU directives.
    • Facilitating CE marking and regulatory acceptance in European and international markets.
  • Occupational Health and Safety:

    • Supporting employers in the textile, footwear, and leather industries to comply with workplace noise regulations.
    • Enabling better risk management and safer environments for machine operators.
  • Market Access and Product Liability:

    • Adopting this standard demonstrates due diligence and conformity with essential EU legal requirements, reducing barriers to trade and enhancing product reliability.

Related Standards

  • EN 12044 - Cutting and punching machines - Safety requirements
  • EN 930 - Roughing, scouring, polishing, and trimming machines - Safety requirements

This document is currently submitted to the Unique Acceptance Procedure.
The first reason for amending the published standard EN 12545:2000 is the revision of the EU-Machinery
Directive 98/37/EC into 2006/42/EC, requiring the adaptation of published European standards cited in the
Official Journal of the European Communities under that Directive.
Additionally at this occasion the normative references have been updated, while also some other limited rather
editorial improvements and corrections have been made.
This document has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and the
European Free Trade Association, and supports essential requirements of EU Directive(s).
