Leather - Physical and mechanical test methods for the determination of soiling - Part 1: Rubbing (Martindale) method (ISO/FDIS 26082-1:2026)

This document specifies a method for determining the resistance of all forms of leather to visible soiling through repeated contact with soiled objects. It provides a physical pretreatment routine for leathers that may be vulnerable to loss of soiling resistance while in service, prior to conducting further tests such as cleaning.

Overview

kSIST FprEN ISO 26082-1:2026 sets out a standardized method for determining the resistance of leather to visible soiling by repeated contact with soiled objects. Known as the Rubbing (Martindale) method, this standard primarily aids in assessing how various leathers respond to physical soiling during service. In addition to the soiling test itself, the document details recommended pretreatments for leathers-particularly important for evaluating materials susceptible to loss of resistance before subjecting them to cleaning or further testing. Harmonized under the International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies (IULTCS), this standard ensures accuracy, comparability, and repeatability of soiling results in the leather industry.

Keywords: leather soiling resistance, Martindale method, physical test methods, leather testing, standard soiling procedure

Key Topics

  • Soiling Resistance Testing: Provides a precise method for evaluating how leather changes in appearance when subjected to rubbing with a standard soiled fabric, highlighting color change and soiling visibility.
  • Martindale Abrasion Apparatus: Utilizes the Martindale machine, which imparts a defined pressure and stroke movement to simulate realistic soiling and wear scenarios.
  • Pretreatment and After-treatment: The standard includes procedures for simulating wear (e.g., abrasion, flexing) prior to the soiling test and after-treatment cleaning to evaluate how well soiling can be removed from leather surfaces.
  • Assessment Techniques: Discusses visual and instrumental methods for rating color change, including the use of grey scales, to ensure objective and consistent measurement.
  • Test Reporting: Details requirements for comprehensive and transparent test reports, including test conditions, apparatus details, soiling cloth description, and assessment outcomes.

Applications

This standard is essential for:

  • Leather Manufacturers: To benchmark and improve the soiling resistance of their products prior to market release or for quality assurance.
  • Product Developers: In footwear, automotive, upholstery, and fashion industries where leather performance during everyday use is critical.
  • Testing Laboratories: For conducting reliable, standardized soiling resistance evaluations on experimental and production leather samples.
  • Customer Specifications: Helps buyers and brands specify required soiling resistance levels and document performance in technical product files or regulatory submissions.
  • Research & Development: Supports the development of new leather finishes, coatings, and cleaning systems by establishing consistent testing routines.

Through these applications, the standard helps ensure consumer products maintain their aesthetic and functional qualities over time, reducing product returns and complaints related to soiling and surface appearance.

Related Standards

To strengthen test reliability and data comparability, kSIST FprEN ISO 26082-1:2026 references several key international standards, including:

  • ISO 2418: Guidelines on the position and preparation of leather specimens for chemical, physical, and mechanical testing.
  • ISO 2419: Conditioning protocols for leather samples to ensure standardized test conditions.
  • ISO 105-A02 & ISO 105-A05: Color fastness assessments using grey scales or instrumental measurement.
  • ISO 12947-1: Specifications for the Martindale abrasion testing apparatus and abrasion resistance measurement.
  • ISO 12945-2: Methodology for using the Martindale apparatus in evaluating pilling, fuzzing, or matting tendencies.
  • ISO 7906: General principles for conducting color fastness tests on leather.
  • ISO 11640: Procedures for evaluating color fastness to rubbing on leather.

These related documents ensure consistency across testing procedures and facilitate compliance across international markets in the leather and furs industry.

By following kSIST FprEN ISO 26082-1:2026, stakeholders across the leather supply chain can guarantee accurate, reproducible assessments for leather soiling resistance, supporting both product claims and regulatory requirements.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
ISO draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)

IULTCS, originally formed in 1897, is a world-wide organization of professional leather societies to further
the advancement of leather science and technology. IULTCS has three Commissions, which are responsible
for establishing international methods for sampling and the testing of leather. ISO recognizes IULTCS as an
international standardizing body for the preparation of test methods for leather
This document was prepared by the Physical Tests Commission of the International Union of Leather
Technologists and Chemists Societies (IUP Commission, IULTCS) in collaboration with the European
Committee for Standardization (CEN) Technical Committee CEN/TC 289, Leather, the secretariat of which
is held by UNI, in accordance with the agreement on technical cooperation between ISO and CEN (Vienna
Agreement).
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 26082-1:2019), which has been technically
revised.
The main changes are as follows:
— The method was updated to the latest versions of ISO 2418, ISO 2419, ISO 7906.
