Overview
SIST-TS CEN/TS 17787:2023 specifies the standardized methods for determining the stability of chelating and complexing agents in fertilizing products, with a focus on inorganic micronutrient fertilizers. These requirements align with the EU Fertilizing Products Regulation (EU) 2019/1009, specifically targeting Component Material Category 1 (CMC 1) and Product Function Category PFC 1(C)(II). The standard covers a wide range of product forms, including powders, granules, aqueous solutions, and suspensions containing micronutrient chelates and complexes.
Ensuring the stability of chelating and complexing agents is vital for maintaining product quality and efficacy, for regulatory compliance, and for supporting sustainable agricultural practices. By providing clear references to European Standard analytical methods, SIST-TS CEN/TS 17787:2023 enhances the comparability and repeatability of testing procedures in the fertilizer industry.
Key Topics
- Scope and Applicability: Defines standardized testing for stability of chelating and complexing agents used in inorganic micronutrient fertilizers.
- Regulatory References: Aligns with requirements established by Regulation (EU) 2019/1009, ensuring legal market access across the European Union.
- Types of Materials Covered:
- Micronutrient chelates and complexes, including mixtures
- Products in powder, granular, aqueous, or suspension forms
- Sample Handling:
- Details on representative sampling (referencing EN 1482-1)
- Procedures for sample preparation (referencing EN 1482-2)
- Testing Methods:
- Stability of chelating agents determined according to CEN/TS 17782:2022
- Stability of complexing agents determined according to CEN/TS 17783:2022
Applications
The standard is used by:
- Fertilizer Manufacturers: To ensure products containing micronutrient chelates and complexes meet EU regulatory requirements for stability, performance, and market approval.
- Testing Laboratories and Quality Control Teams: To follow harmonized, referenced procedures when analyzing the stability of micronutrient fertilizers, enabling consistent, reproducible results.
- Regulatory Authorities: To verify and enforce compliance with the European fertilizer regulation (EU) 2019/1009 for market surveillance and certification.
- Distributors and Importers: To demonstrate conformity of products with EU stability requirements during supply chain management and cross-border trade.
Practical benefits include:
- Enabling fair competition by standardizing test methods
- Increasing transparency and trust across the fertilizer supply chain
- Supporting manufacturers in the development of stable, efficient micronutrient fertilizers for sustainable agriculture
